Where did you grow up? And where would you rather be?

It's really hard for me to imagine people still living out in the middle of nowhere.

This thread was inspired by Terra's post, about not living near a mall. If I didn't want to go to one mall, I could just go to 5+ other malls. One mall was right across the street from another mall.

When I drive into the next county even, I see a drastic change between Broward county and Palm Beach. And this is a matter of a few miles.

I grew up in Lexington, Michigan. Ugh. That area is mostly farmers, rednecks, and some retirees (and that's only because of the proximity to Lake Huron). The US Census Bureau doesn't count it as part of any metro area. We were some of the only people out there with running water. Internet was dialup-only for years (they got DSL recently).

I currently live just outside of Detroit, which is at least near stuff, but I love big cities They don't even have to be that big, just someplace with a downtown. I loved Seattle when I visited there this summer.

I wouldn't mind living in a big city for a while. Not so much the country, though. Maybe just to visit and get a chance to see all those stars at night.

Yeah, visiting is one thing. Living there for around eleven years is another

I was born and raised in the sweet sweet area of Columbus GA.

That's the river walk. Very cool place to chill out at night.

I prefer the country near the city. Just in case I need to go shopping, it's not a long drive, and very convenient.

I honestly get a little scared being in capital places. Like Atlanta. I went on a trip and had to go to the airport, and with very large buildings being around me as well as people moving so fast. It's very to me.

Paw Paw road is the only thing that sticks out.

There's a place in Michigan called Paw Paw. I always thought it was a funny name.

The name, also spelled paw paw, paw-paw, and papaw, probably derives from the Spanish papaya, perhaps because of the superficial similarity of their fruit. Pawpaw has numerous other common names, often very local, such as prairie banana, Indiana (Hoosier) banana, West Virginia banana, kansas banana, Kentucky banana, Michigan banana, Missouri Banana, the poor man's banana, and Ozark banana.

I guess technically the country (Otokuni district is considered much less urban than many of the big city areas...)...and it was very peacful. I loved it and still do enjoy being there whenever I can~

Because the quiet makes me nervous, and I'm a night person, I prefer cities and more populated areas. However, Woodstock, for all its faults (there's a lot of them, too), is probably the best place for me functionally, as it's really easy for me to just walk anywhere - the grocery store's basically right behind the apartment building I live in, and the far end of town is just a half hour walk from here.

Yep.
Sort of suburban area of the Bronx. I love this city, though. The little quirks and details make it all the better.
Edit: Oops! It bwoke.

Always in the city. Suburbs, really... but I wouldn't be used to country life. :\ Rarely been, actually.

I've always been in the suburbs of DC all my life (~20 miles out). We've had the city close but never really go into it much. And with Northern Virginia as developed as it is, I never really had a feel for how southern of a state Virginia truly is until i started traveling around to look at colleges. Hell, tonight while I was out at dinner, it was karaoke night and 90% of the songs were all country. We don't HAVE country music in Northern VA. It's a totally different world down here in Harrisonburg.

Yeah, I've heard about that. Northern Virginia is practically a different state from the rest of Virginia.

For a few years I lived in Western New York state, which was different from most of the rest of New York state (and of course from NYC).

I've only been to Northern VA, not Southern, and the place looks similar to places down here. Well, minus the view of the mountains in the background.

I've lived either in or near one of two major US cities throughout my life (Austin, then Jacksonville). Now I live in Gainesville which is a major college town.

Although I do often visit relatives who live out in the country, and I have to say I probably would not mind living out there, at least for a little while. It's very peaceful.

You stole our name!

I grew up in the suburbs of Clevland, and it was nice. I'm now in Columbus and I could not see living in the country.

I live in a suburb, but I'm pretty close to Chicago. It wouldn't take more than a half hour to reach the lakeshore from here, probably.

Since I've lived in this exact same town all m life, I really think of it as home. Don't get me wrong, overall I think of the town as meh, but I wouldn't want to live in another town in the same area. Either it'd be too large or too crime-riddled.

Speaking of crime, guess where the Unabomber came from?
