Alright, I should've differentiated between "cheap death" and "cheap hit". Both needlessly break the flow of gameplay, even if you don't get knocked back to the last checkpoint (and for that, there were still plenty of crushing things).

In normal gameplay, ignoring the occasional time that Sonic would go too fast and fall through the floor and die, the main thing I can think of is Sonic 3, Icecap act 1, as Tails. The first time you play, the first slope will kill you if you don't go in the bonus or special stage.

Don't get me wrong; I did enjoy the classic games a bit more than anything recent. But... the flaws have always been there. For every "running too fast and falling in a pit" in Adventure, there's an "attacking a firefly in Sonic 2 only to have it turn invincible for no good reason midjump" or "getting suddenly crushed by a rock in Mystic Cave" or "falling in a pit that would be bottomless but instead has spikes at the bottom of it" or "having spikes appear out of nowhere from a wall"... alright, I just have major issues with Mystic Cave. I liked Sonic 3/K best out of the classic series, followed by Sonic 1, then Sonic 2 (something about it felt more... solid, and I hated the tube special stages).

Ah, Sonic. I'm an old fan of Sonic. Hell, I kinda enjoyed SOME of his new games. Most suck, but some were generally enjoyable.

Unfortunately, I don't see this working the way we hope. It'd be great if they make the fabled "Sonic 4" and blow our minds, but I don't see it happening. I guess I've just about given up hope for my old friend the blue hedgehog.

The trailer also didn't help me much. It was mostly just marketing crap, and just the idea of making a 2D sonic game is to appease people who have been complaining to Sonic about it. But oh well, we'll find out soon enough.l

Skreeny: Nah. I already made mention in IRC about how you could do that. I think that's the only classic game to have a level to allow that. But that's only one level dude. Sonic Rush had several from what I understand. Sonic Advance 2 was just... about it too...

Also, I'll just point out Sonic 2 is the best game ever hands down. Arguing against that will result in a penalty along with a double execution. (Also the firefly thing isn't a bug...)

Never said the firefly thing was a bug. I said it was an obnoxious, unnecessary break in the flow of gameplay. They go from vulnerable to harmful in less time than it takes to hit them from a jump, and there's no warning (outside of "immediately after they appear, and then every x seconds thereafter"). The graphic doesn't even quite match; they hurt you as soon as they start flashing at all, not once the light gets large. Of course, it's somewhat questionable that they made it so they can hurt you while flashing, but you can't hurt them, even if you're invincible/flashing/super.

They are, however, slightly less obnoxious than that one set of blocks in Chemical Plant, where if you spin, you'll roll under the second-to-bottom one and get crushed.

Also, a significant part of the reason you can get away without jumping in that one Rush level (I haven't played the first one, but the general complaint I've heard is less "too linear" and more "too many bottomless pits") is the increase in aerial mobility and removed need to jump to hit springs.

(Supposedly it's possible to get through Palmtree Panic 1 without jumping, but I don't have a copy of it in front of me to try it--just gotta use that first 3D jump to get past the spring.)

...Not even going to bother trying to defend Advance 2, since I've never really played it and the only thing I ever heard was "way too freaking fast".

Think Sonic Rush on steroids. The gameplay is ass, but I must say I liked the boss fights and music. music was the best part actually.
