The only thing that I didn't like in the classic Sonic games was that there was a timer. I loved looking around or going back and getting more rings, but that damn timer was a pain in my ass.

That's kinda funny... The only time I ever noticed it existed was when I hit the barrel.

I really don't want to get excited. :/
Sonic Unleashed wasn't bad, but the Werehog levels far outnumbered the regular Sonic levels..

At this point, I don't think any of the classic games would qualify as "getting it right" any more. Let's look at various complaints!

Too many added characters: The series jumped from 2 characters up to 6 by the time of Sonic & Knuckles. Each game added at least one with the exception of Sonic Chaos and Sonic & Knuckles, and S&K added another Sonic clone anyway. At that point, the number of Sonic copies was up to 4.

Hold-right-to-win gameplay: Name a first level in a Sonic game. It will be quickest won by holding right and jumping occasionally. Incidentally, these seem to be a lot of the most popular levels. (Other notes can be made of all the zigzagging paths that show up all over the place in which Sonic only has to let go of the controller and wind up somewhere down the path--Chemical Plant and Hydrocity, I'm looking at you.)

Dash pads all over the place: Started in Chemical Plant, although they only showed up there and in Mystic Cave in Sonic 2. Sonic 3/K made an artform out of this--the only levels that lacked something resembling them were Angel Island, Marble Garden, Sandopolis, and Lava Reef. Death Egg gets special points for having long uncontrollable sections.

Cheap deaths (often by bottomless pit): Play Sonic 1. Go anywhere with spikes. Well, at least in the original version. Green Hill Zone act 2's giant moving platforms get special attention here, as Sonic can easily run through their sides and off the bottom of the screen to his death. On a not-spikes-or-pits note, Sonic 1 brought Caterkillers and Yadrins (not to mention the Orbinauts in Labyrinth and Star Light and the bombs in Star Light), while Sonic 2 had those fireflies in Mystic Cave and the mantises in Metropolis, Sonic 3 had the pufferfish in Hydrocity, flying pufferfish in Marble Garden, and pseudo-Orbinauts in Icecap and Launch Base, and S&K had those spikey things in Death Egg (admittedly, not that tough with Sonic; same with the Orbinaut things in Icecap/Launch Base) and the Caterkillers in Sandopolis.

Random glitches: Sonic 3's manual had a note saying that Robotnik had set traps that would be triggered by Sonic's speed, and that you would need to wait until the timer ran out (or hit the reset button) if you got stuck. I think that qualifies as "enough said".

Everyone says they want it to go back to being just Sonic and Eggman, but by "Sonic" they seem to mean "Sonic and Knuckles and maybe Tails and Amy and Metal Sonic oh and Fang would be cool too".

I'm not even going to speculate what would be good or bad or whatever that they could do, because pretty much everything would be "bad" to certain parts of the fanbase (bear in mind, there are people who consider the spindash to be the downfall of Sonic, or the pinnacle of Sonic games to be either Sonic 1 or Sonic CD).

They are going to introduce a new character.

I mean come on, that is a staple to every new Sonic game since Sonic 2 and they still continue adding more.

I'm fine with a new character or two being introduced, as long as none of their names end with "the Hedgehog".

I really need to sit down and write that thesis paper on the modern sonic and how much he sucks. Really, I already wrote a paper on why the latest trend for Super Sonic is terrible...

I dunno, I like speedy Sonic a lot. There's something about being able to blast through a level if I choose to do so that I really enjoy. I know when I play SA2B I run through as fast as I can because one, the time bonus is the best way to get points and two it's more fun than taking your time.

No. They uhhh... Set up a hotline that, when called, told the player to press up and down...

The big difference between the new and the old here is that only 3 of those characters were playable, and only selectable for single player in sonic 3 and S&K. Compare that too the recent sonic 3D games that often have more than 6 playable characters, that all have to be played to reach the end.

My main complaint with the new games gameplay is the linearity, there's on path to take instead of the old ones very branching and different paths trough the levels. And one cannot deny that the sections that only involved watching has increased in the 3D ones.

I'm not gonna comment on this one because frankly I love dash pads, also never seen this mention before.

You call the enemies cheap deaths? It's piss easy to stock up on rings and get by, now bad camera placement and controls is a far worse cheap death.

I have had 1 one of those happen to me (although frequently) in my entire life whilst playing sonic 1 to 3, and I played it religiously.

In short... I fail to see what you're getting at. :/

I think the game won't be bad though, considering they seem to be going for an old school 2D similar to some wiiware games... Then again, they also made that Sonic Genesis for GBA...

Sonic GBA wasn't a new game though, it was a half-assed attempt at porting Sonic 1 that they somehow fucked up.

That's the thing. Sonic is supposed to be speedy, but don't accommodate him like Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Rush. Those games were practically hold right to win. The older games up to Sonic Advance had it so that you'd be forced to jump or forced you change direction. They had sections that would make you feel uncomfortable. It made the player learn how to retain speed while navigating through these areas. That's what classic sonic is all about.

Well there you go. It fits well with the classic style... Not the best example, but it works. I think City Escape and remember how I used to spend time stream lining that level...

The thing was, Sonic is built around being fast. He's advertised as the world's fastest hedgehog, fastest thing alive, etc., so when I have to slow down to do some random precision jumping, I get unhappy. I love the flow of just running and blowing through the level, watching him spin, dash, loop, grind, and everything else.
