Have you done anything interesting when naming characters in games that allow the option?

With RPGs, I used to usually name a character after myself, and sometimes some others after friends or other people. Now I just use the default names for the most part. There was an FF1 game in which I used the names OMG!, LOL!, WTF!, and BBQ!. That was on the NES with the 4-character limit. When I switched to the GBA version, they had to shed their exclamation points.

For Zelda games I often give Link some bizarre name. Sometimes I go Acmlm-style and use random letters. If I'm really lazy I'll use like AAAAAA or ABCDEF. I don't think I've ever actually called him Link

With the Oracles I often use a really dumb name for the baby like POOP, CRAP, etc. It's funny to have "POOP? It's a fine name! He's happy to have it!" or whatever.

I know of one man who typed in a random name in the dark and thus began a legend, but I'll leave that to him to tell you the full story.

Me. :/

...Last time I tried to name a character (besides the main character) was back in the Golden Sun days. Gave all my allies names that coincided with people I knew.
For example, Garet? Changed his name to Doyle. And I changed Mia's name to Bri. As for Ivan, I forgot what I named him...Ryan came to mind, but it doesn't seem right like that.
Of course, I still gave Issac my own name, just had to compress it a bit to fit.

Nah, I'm boring. I usually just use my name for the main character and my brother's for the rival. In EarthBound, I just named them all after friends.

Same thing here. I just go with the official names or the names of my friends and I.

I'll name the main character Anya if she's female and Dryden if it's male.

For single-character RPGs, X, with 5 spaces (don't get it twisted). For multi-char RPGs, either the defaults (anything not NIS), or random generated names I like (NIS). Some characters have set names for me, though, like Melody is always the first F.Fighter and Kina is always the F.Healer.

Though sometimes I like to be crazy and name the ninja Grapefruit.

Usually for RPGs I'll just leave the default names. For NIS games I use the best random name that the game generates, and with Pokemon I'll give my characters/party interesting names (or try to).

The best I came up with was this:

I do this for other games, too.

In Japanese games I usually used サックン (Sakkun) if the character was supposed to be "me" (Sakkun could be short for Satoko or Satoshi so it works universally), and otherwise just the character's name...

I forgot about this. Didn't think of the series when I posted for some odd reason(wtf).
THOSE games...normally I will let the random selection decide, but sometimes I'll just see similarities that have to trigger a name change or find a name that fits in well with someone else.
Example being that I had a brawler with one name that almost sounded like Mufasa. I ended up referring to him as that for a while, then I noticed "Wait why is this extra letter here" and renamed him.
Another case was while I was checking names for a Rogue, the name "Lone Wolf" came up. I remembered that for a while, then when it came time to make a Ninja I thought to myself "Oh hey that would be a great name for him" and tagged it on.

...and shit, I forgot about FFCC:EoT too. I'll have to check that later...

I just pull names out of my ass.

It's where a lot of my RO names came from, actually.

For single-player games, though, I'll usually use "Andrew" as the protagonist's name.

...I must be the only one who hasn't named their rivals in the pokemon games something stupid.

First save I use default names.

Second playthrough I start naming characters after friends and such. My current save of Disgaea 2 has me naming characters named after people I know online.

For both character names and file names I almost always enter "Andrew". If there is more than one nameable character I'll usually start using the names of my friends for them.

In Pokemon my rival's name is always the name of one of my closest friends .

I remember a save file for Final Fantasy VII that had Cloud named as Skater, Barret was FatPig, Tifa was named after some girl that my friend had a crush on, Red XIII was Penis and the rest were default. It wasn't me that named them though, my aforementioned friend started that save. I played the majority of the storyline but he kept the save, maxed everybody out, did every freaking side quest then he went on the beat the Emerald Weapon with just Tifa, by herself.

All I do is use my name or the default name.
Usually the default name, as of late.

I've been more used to giving my characters my name, and whenever I have to give a monster a name, I'll just usually find a compound name that sounds tough and cool or fits their original form. I think I still have that Zudomon that has been named The Blob since it was born.

Of course, in Dragon Warrior 2, I named my hero Turd. Don't ask, please.

Usually I use my own name or the default if there is one. On occasion I will name a character something like "Stupid" mainly to make dialogue a little funnier. In a game where there are no default names I usually come up with something. Though I do have a file on my Dragon Warrior 3 cart with all four characters in my party named after the original team in Golden Sun due to lack of imagination.
