My first was Dragon Warrior too, rented when it was new (20 years ago) ... I was 6 and didn't have a clue how it worked at first, but I learned before long and soon played many more RPG's I think it's the first one I've beaten too (wasn't until a while later though), or at least one of the first.

The first game I played (and beat) on emulator was FF6

- Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (in Europe/Germany labeled "Mystic Quest Legend" - quite confusing if you think about Seiken Densetsu, or Mystic Quest for Game Boy). We all know the disadvantages from that title, but the music rocked. It may have lacked bass even for SNES relations (compare that to the DKC3 final boss battle track or the Rudora no Hihou soundtrack), but it was catchy indeed. And easy enough. First enemies die in one hit, over the course in two and later in three hits. And those bosses were _extremely_ weak to their counter-element, it did like quadruple damage. Of course, some could dish out a lot of damage per hit, and if you attempt a low-level run in this game, you will have royal pain with some of those fiends, especially if you don't have that needed Moon Helm.

- Final Fantasy II via an Action Replay II on my PAL console. Really liked it, the characters grew on me. It might have a lot of dust even back then, but I liked the overall game, albeit short. The graphics were superior to FFV's (imo), although FFV of course was a lot bigger and more interesting.

Now with 60% more chance of spontaneous combustion.

If it wasn't Zelda... then this Mystery Game (tm) I've been ages wondering if it was even real.

Otherwise... something for the NES maybe? I really have no idea. I played a lot of RPGs for SNES, though with that specific turn-based battle system the earliest one I can think of right now is Lufia.

And for an unrelated note, Mystic Quest happens to be the first game I ever emulated and the boss music was awesome.

Honestly, I can't remember which RPG was my first. Hell, the earliest game I can remember playing was--[/offtopic] Anyways, the only game that I feel comfortable saying was my first RPG would be Super Mario RPG(yep). And it wasn't even my copy to begin with, belonged to two of my cousins so I had to play it over there.

(Bit of info here, the TV that I used was so blurry, I thought that the MISS was actually a clock with numbers next to it, making me think that there was some kind of negative effect being inflicted between parties. Can't say what I thought it was, might have been a Doom-like effect that I was thinking of.)

Unless I missed a game that counted towards the RPG genre...that should be right.

First RPG? Hm.

I think my first was probably Pokemon Red. (Never did beat it legit, haha. Damn Rival.) I can't remember many others, since I never really took a liking to them (I was terrible at those games)... I've played Chrono Trigger, Earthbound (all emulated, of course) but never finished any of them.

Golden Sun was the first I had seen the ending to (a friend beat it for me, damn final boss).

Heh.

I actually don't remember my first RPG. I remember playing the first Zelda and I hated it. Of course back then I was more into arcade fighters and platformers. I want to say that FF7 was my first, but that was when I was 18, so I don't think it was that late into my gaming life before I played an RPG.

My first was probably Super Mario RPG. I remember renting it and loving it.

Paper Mario was one of the first ones I ever had. I actually play it still every now and then, often with gameshark codes.

Going through and finding unused/beta stuff is always fun.

Hmmmm.... It's either Pokemon Red/Blue, or DragonWarrior I... I honestly don't know, but it was probably Pokemon. Man, I sucked at RPGs as a kid, though.

technically the first RPG I picked up and played was Faxanadu, but this was before I knew how to read, so I never got far. I think I reached the first boss.. I'd have to see the game again, it's vague in my memory.
but I consider my first to be Super Mario RPG. I remember asking my mom what the "RPG" stood for, and then still not fully understanding what it meant. it took me ages to realize that leveling up was crucial to winning battles.
I normally don't care for the genre. besides SMRPG, which is still one of my favorite games of all time, and the first Pokemon, I don't think I've beaten any RPG. I always lose interest.

My dad, who was in the military, thought it was "Rocket-Propelled Grenade"

I remember Faxanadu. I don't think I actually beat it though.

The first RPG I ever played was Pokémon Blue.
I was about six years old then.
Good times...

Fairly sure it was Pokemon Blue, but I don't remember all of my old GB games and when I got them.

Maybe Super Mario RPG? Maybe Final Fantasy Mystic Quest? Maybe Might and Magic III?

Okay, I know I played SMRPG before FFMQ. But I still don't know if I played an SNES RPG or a PC RPG first.

You guys should seriously check out the Might and Magic series, btw. I'm pretty sure you can find it online and DOSBOX some life into it. MMIII is probably the best, and then World of Xeen is close behind. I don't think the 3D ones really did the originals justice.

It has to be the Dragon Warrior I&II compilation cartridge for the Game Boy. It wasn't that long ago. Maybe four years. So I'm still relatively new to RPGs, but I seem to have a good grip on them.

I'm extremely new to RPGs. As in I've only been playing them for slightly over a year (not counting trying Magic Candle as a kid)

I think Faxanadu came right after Dragon Warrior for me but I'd consider it more of an adventure game. Leveling does nothing.

Might and Magic is really complex - at least, the early ones are. Heroes of Might and Magic is great but that's a totally different series.

RPG = Really Pretty Game?

Levelling in Faxanadu determines the amount of gold you start with when you use a password to continue, actually.

The first RPG I can remember playing was the original Final Fantasy. I sucked at it, still do. ;;;
