There seem to be a lot of fans of RPGs here What is the first one you've played and the first one you've beaten? (I'm referring to traditional RPGs, not stuff like Zelda)

I started with a lousy PC RPG called "The Magic Candle III". It was really complicated for my 7-year-old brain and I never got very far, although I remember naming the protagonist "silly". IIRC, it had individual inventories for each character and you actually had to feed your characters and make sure they slept.

I stayed away from RPGs for a long time, until one of my friends introduced me to Final Fantasy games. I found them a lot easier to get into and understand. The first RPG I beat was Final Fantasy VI

Super Mario RPG for me. I'm not really a huge fan of RPGs, but the ones starring Mario are always great. That's why it was the first game I mapped.


RPGs about sword-wielding people fighting generic dragons/monsters/demons don't really appeal to me at all.

I thought FF1 for NES was really hard

The GBA version is so much easier, at least if you skip the optional dungeons. At least that one has proper MP

My first RPG was definitely Pokemon: Blue Version. I had so much fun playing that game when I was a kid, I still remember getting stuck for days because I didn't realize that you could use cut to destroy those mini trees .

Pokemon is a RPG, yes... :\ Dunno why you'd think it doesn't count.

Final Fantasy is hard on the NES, but all you have to do is... grind... (Hey, back then we liked grinding!)

You probably should in all honesty... I can see how you (and others) could be tripped up by the magic system.

GBA port is perfectly acceptable.

And with the NES FF1, don't forget the "Ineffective" "Ineffective" over and over again. Maybe I sucked, because my characters tended to do "1DMG" for a long time.

Seeing that I've been playing video games for about as long as I can remember, I'm a bit chronologically confused about my first RPG.
Now, it may have been Dragon Warrior, but it also could be Pokémon Blue Version. Also, it's unlikely, but Super Mario RPG might have really been my first; it's probably not that one, though, as I think we got that one after the others. (Once again, however, I don't really remember that far back.)

Ultima. It put the difficulty of Final Fantasy 1 to absolute shame. I still haven't done everything in that game!

I'm actually replaying it right now (GBA version), it's still my favorite Final Fantasy after all these years, aside from FFXI.

I prefer the original SNES version, TBH. Forget all those silly goodies, you only need the main story.

Yeah, it was Pokemon Red for me too.
I actually cried tears of joy when I got to the credits roll. It seems really dumb now, but I was quite pleased with myself back then.

Probably Dragon Warrior (free with NP subscription back in the day), though I didn't get to play it much before my parents sold it.

The first one I actually finished? Chrono Trigger. That was an amazing experience that few games have been able to match since.
