Eh, I'm a newbie at hacking into ROMs for anything non-graphical. Now, I want to perform some hacks on a game that was originally released only in Japan and translated by a fan. This game is Mother, or Earthbound Zero, for NES.

Can someone point me in the right direction on how I'd learn to crack NES ROMs? I haven't really studied the 6502 Assembly and I fear I'm going to get stuck having to learn THAT. But that's me going on about stuff, can someone tell me what I do need and not need to know?

Or... if there are already EBZero tools for things like maps/edit text/etc. I don't have too much experience in actually MAKING programs to begin with, but I'm willing to try and learn.

You might want to head over to starmen.net, since they have much more information on this.

I looked at the rules on their forum and they disallow any talk about ROMs:

What they don't allow is discussion of where or how to get illegal ROMs.

That kind of discussion is not allowed at Jul either, but we keep on hacking anyways.

I say as long as you don't ask for download links or anything like that you should be fine.
