I prefer laptops, as I find them more convenient. I can use my laptop anywhere. I take it to school, work, my parents', on vacation, etc. I don't have to worry about not knowing my passwords when I try to go online from other locations either The main disadvantage is poor performance, but I'm not into too many modern games so it's not a big deal.

What about you?

I have a laptop, and while it is the type of "power" laptop intended to replace a desktop machine, it's *still* not quite as powerful as a true desktop. And I need a lot of computing power for many of the things I do.

I love my MacBook Pro, but contrary to Apple's ads, it excels at work and not play. It has a lot of raw CPU power but not necessarily graphics power, and it runs really hot, and it has had some hardware problems that were not very convenient because they took a long time to fix each time. Plus ... it's not upgradeable beyond the RAM and the hard disk. There's no way to really upgrade a video board in most laptops.

For pure expandability reasons I would vote desktop. I'm at home when I'm not at work. I don't really have need of a mobile computer.

I'm almost always at home (when not at work, of course) and on my desk, so I wouldn't have much use for a laptop ...

Then there's my dual screen setup (27"+19") no laptop can replace, and desktop keyboards/mice just feel nicer ... sure that can all be plugged into a laptop as well (and it's still easier to unplug and bring around), but a desktop does it better

Desktop.

If a cooling fan breaks (like I've seen happen to many laptops), I can replace it myself.

I pretty much only use my desktop and I prefer them, though I wouldn't mind having a high-end laptop for when I'm on-the-go!

I'm big on both. My laptop is a bit more powerful than my desktop, however.

For what I do, though, I could use my netbook as my main computer if I so wished. Only issue possible would be the low screen height, though 1024x600 isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

...Too bad I didn't get the 1366x768 one. Oh well.

On the plus side this one came with XP, though.

Laptops suck. They die, overheat... cost too much... worthless.

Desktops last for much longer and can be fixed.

Really depends on what you do or want to do!

They each have their pros and cons, I guess.. right now I have no use for computers outside my home, so I don't really need something portable. Sure, you can move laptops around the house, too, but right now I don't even have any use for a computer outside my room, so, uh.. yeah.

We have an old laptop, but the battery is dead, so it's pretty much just a small desktop now. That makes it useless when there's no outlet around.

Desktops are better in my opinion because they're more powerful and don't constantly overheat like the vast majority of laptops I've seen do.

Also, the ability to fix and upgrade it yourself is really nice.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I prefer desktops, although lately i've been on the mbp because my room has been terribly hot so im stuck downstairs on the couch.

Laptops are much more expensive than desktops, harder to maintain/upgrade/service, a bit clunkier to use and not quite as powerful, but you can move them around or sit in a comfortable position to use one.

Desktops I can build myself for cheap, and make sure I have quality parts. I can easily get in to the case when something explodes or otherwise starts on fire or just to clean the cat hair out of a heat sink. They can also be top of the line machines for about half the price of a top of the line laptop. Unfortunately, they cannot easily be moved around, need to be plugged in at all times and you can't adjust yourself much from what your seat allows you, and still be able to use the keyboard and mouse, or view the monitor.

I prefer desktops over anything. I can understand the convenience of a laptop. But I just won't buy one unless I absolutely have to. Like for major schooling or something.

I just use my current desktop for web browsing and gaming. Maybe some compiling, but that is why I am currently building a gaming rig to suit all of those needs.

(PS, Is getting the tower and PS in the mail soon. Will have pics in the provided thread!)

I prefer a laptop since I am always moving around. It really depends on what fits the situation. I'd go for a desktop if it was reasonable, the performance is clearly better.

You know, playing WoW at Barnes and Noble would actually be quite comfy... This crappy chair I sit on hurts my back after a while and my house is lonely during the day... If I had a lappy, I would definitely make use of their wifi!

I'm a laptop guy, myself--the portability factor is a huge plus for me, because I don't like sitting in the same place all day if I want to be able to use the internet for extended periods of time. I guess it's ironic that I have a desktop, that said, but I'd certainly like to get a laptop sometime in the near future.

I don't really have a preference. Depends what I'd use it for.
Laptop would be more convenient, because of the portability of it, but a desktop would be better for the horsepower.

Desktops all the way, since you don't have to worry about overheating/running out of power/instability.

My laptop, a 2007 MacBook Pro, was basically pushed on me by the greedy employees at the campus's only computer store, a Mac store. They claimed it would be essential for my major, but it has proved to cause me nothing but trouble. I must say it is the worst machine I've ever had to use. My seven-year-old desktop is more stable and reliable than it. I could go on for hours on the displeasure this thing has caused me.

That said, my brother's laptop is actually quite nice, but I'd still prefer a desktop.

That's a pretty unusual experience, to be frank, though I have heard of others (however few) who haven't had the best experience either, usually with a problem making the transition from Windows, or having a hardware issue.

My MacBook Pro is from 2006 and while it has had a few heat-related issues, it's never had a software problem in its lifespan and it is almost always on; it still handles any task I can throw at it. If you're really having that much trouble with it, I have a lot of training and experience dealing with OS X (though my certification has since expired; it was for Tiger anyway.) I know of people with older MacBooks and PowerBook G4s that they still use to this day without issues, with recent applications even.

Of course, I can understand completely if you got a mid-2007 notebook with one of those faulty nVidia boards in it. Those machines sucked.

You hear endlessly of heat problems with laptops these days though. It'd be cool if they could make a fast processor/GPU that did not generate so much heat.

I've had laptops, but all of which need to be pluged in in order to work/stay on. So just based on past experience, I have to say desktop. I would love a lappy that I can use without having to worry about wires and plugs 24/7.

Oh, my battery doesn't last long

But it does last a little while in case I'm just doing something quick like checking E-mail And I can plug it in and go anywhere with an outlet (although having Wi-Fi helps )

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

I prefer horsepower over portability.

Soooo... Desktop. (Though having a laptop IS nice for when you want to sit on the couch and do stuff... remote desktop through house lan for the win )
