I think that creating a wiki to organize everythink that has been figured out of NSMB level format. we could create a page for each sprite, for each block explaining it, with pictures and examples, and some pages explaining the level format, how to hack other things such as music, textures etc... and some confusing things such as activators etc...

It would be easier to know how a sprite works, you would just search for the sprite name or number, instead of looking into the big threads for the info.

I have created a free wiki here: http://nsmbhacking.wikidot.com/ you're welcome to register and edit pages. I still don't know very well how to use it, i will figure it out.

if you like the idea, please help me to put everything there, well organised!

sounds good, but you have to allow users to register first. XD

ok.

now it's editable.

Please read the guide on how to name the pages and write things, so everything is in the same format.

I am making a script that will upload all the sprites we have listed here automatically (rather than manually creating a page for each sprite). Please don't create any pages for sprites yet, because the script will overwrite them all...

when i finish it and they are all uploaded, i will tell you

This seems like a good idea. I also think that for each sprite we should have instructions on how to place them in the editor. ie. the flag sprite goes at the bottom of the flagpole.

of course not! it's only that i think that in this forum if you look for one sprite's data, it's not very organised. you have to go through the big thread and search for the sprite number for all the times it is mentioned (which may be a lot, in different pages...) In the wiki, you could go to the sprite's page and you have everything that is known of that sprite instantly.

good news! the script is working and uploading all the sprite data from Treeki's big post. Not the others, because everybody posted it in a different format so it was hard to make a script
we'll have to make them by hand

So you make the topics in this forum obsolete with your wiki and have ultimate control over them, so if, say, you disagree with something here, it doesn't matter, because you have the wiki to do what you want with.

Furthermore, people may choose to contribute to your wiki instead of here, making this forum pointless.

Just saying it as I see it, is all. Nothing that splits control over content between two parties like this ever ends without tears.

I don't really see the Wiki replacing the forums. I see it as sort of a reference library for the stuff we currently know. Hack support on these forums is still overwhelmingly needed for new and experienced hackers, since we still have a bunch of functions and dynamics about the game to figure out.

I don't agree. It will not make this forum obsolete. I just propose to have a wiki to organise the info better.

I don't have control over the wiki. A wiki is a site that anyone can register and edit pages.

Of course not! this forum is very useful to ask things, put the levels you made... The wiki is only as a reference to the sprite data and all those things.

Go ahead with the wiki, but don't forget that you kinda' need to participate here as well if you want NSMB hacking to continue. This effort could have both negative and positive effects. Just letting you know guys... :/

I think it'll be okay... both ways work for me, personally. I like going to the sprite thread and CNT-F'ing the sprite im looking for, but I could see a wiki page per sprite being pretty useful, too.

Some of the more complicated stuff (paths, resetting view size and properties, cameras, etc) wont be so complicated if Treeki incorporates them into the next version of the editor, which would mean less need for FAQs and stuff.

BTW, anyone know if he's still working on it, or is he taking a break, or did he just get sick of it?

I don't know. it's true that he hasnt made any update lately. it's a pity because we know lots of things of the format that are still unimplemented. i think its not that hard to implement them... If treeki has "got sick" of it and he won't make any more updates he should give out the source code...

I believe that last thing he mentioned in terms of editor status was that he was trying to deal with camera issues. I think he wanted to make a tool on the editor to make custom camera view areas.(Which would open a hell of a lot of options for us hacking the game, cause we currently have to work within the set camera coordinates)

I haven't worked on it for a while because I've been busy with other projects.

To clear this up a bit, I have a really short attention span - I can work for something on a while and then get "programmer's block", where I can try to code but I just won't be able to get anything done. I'll see if I can work on it, but if not, I might release the source code here.

The only problem is that it's written using Visual C# 2008, and pretty messy - many parts of the code are lacking comments (although they're hopefully still understandable) and some stuff is just coded badly, like language support.

In addition, there are also a bunch of things which are only partly implemented in my current version - for example, the points in paths are shown, but paths themselves aren't treated individually, and there's no way to edit them.

I'll post back if I decide on anything.

edit: I've decided to post it, but I'm just not sure how. The thing is that I'd rather not have people making various edited releases which could get confusing - I do think it would help if anyone else wanted to contribute to it, but I don't know how to do it.

In addition, although it might seem selfish, I want to be recognised for my work on the original editor and maintain some control over it - I'm happy with how it's turned out so far, I don't want people releasing versions with new features which don't work well or don't fit well with the rest of the editor and such.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I could do it?
