Go! Copy-and-Paste straight from AB2!

It's a title-in-progress but, it'll work for now. Anyway, I'm working on something new. The story goes that this Shyguy has defected from Bowser's forces with dreams of conquer of his own. To realize these dreams though, he must first steal the Dark Tome from a deserted underground shrine. With the Tome in hand he must set out to find the Onyx Wand, a wand capable of fulfilling his dreams of power.

Here are some screens from the game. Only one level done so far.

I added SMB3 bricks and I've been changing the palettes and graphics of lots of blocks and items. The bricks are also animated but the shot doesn't show that.

Zero Mission graphics work great here as shrine graphics.

Inside the shrine. Expect to find a few hidden passages in the walls. No enemies though, since it's supposed to be deserted. It's a find the Dark Tome and leave sort of level. For the record, I really like that running sprite I gave the Shyguy.

I'm still working on the graphics for the Shyguy. Normal Shyguy is the most complete right now with about half of the graphics done for him. Powered-up Shyguy is purple and has a red headband. His graphics are just started. Wand-wielding Shyguy is black with the red headband and his graphics are the same as powered-up Shyguy so their at the same level. I don't think I'm going to include a cape/flying anything in the game.

I guess I'll do a demo after I complete the first world. I dunno where that's going to be since I'm using ExGFX finally and I can't just throw down piece from the Standard objects list. Gotta build piece by piece...

It looks good graphically...

Though the idea of having a level without enemies seems rather odd, maybe it'll work out...

looks cool. I kind of gave up SMW hacking a while ago.
Now I'm into NSMB and SM64 hacking

sounds like a neat premise. Might I suggest that if the shrine was abandoned, that perhaps some wildlife like bats or crawlies might have gotten in?

Hmm, that might be a good idea. It should be too hard to redraw something like a Koopa w/o shell to look like a crawlie and I could use Swoopers for the bats.

If you want flight, just add a propeller. Boom, Fly Guy.

I didn't think of Fly Guy. I more thought of Glide Guy (ones with umbrellas) when I first thought about it. I could use the Fly Guy idea and just disable the actual flight and only allow for floating. Maybe I could also decrease how fast Masrio descends when floating like for the Raccoon Mario patch.

EDIT:Can't add a new reply so I'll just edit one in.

I've added SMB3 pipes and now know exactly how they work. Yoshi Coins will be replaced. Also, NSMB cave graphics are in.

Not just a simple palette change with Tweaker, I've made it so that Red vertical Koopas change into Blue Koopas when stomped and Green Bouncing Koopas change into Yellow Koopas when stomped. Just to add a bit of variety to the game.

Does anyone have suggestions for what I can chage the Yoshi Coins into? Someone already suggested SMB2 cherries, which could work but I'd like some other ideas as well.

It's probably best to keep the Yoshi coins 16x32 so you don't have to worry about the fact that the game is coded to assume they're that size. That said, you could make them artifacts or something from the shrine, or just generic big coins.

Can't be bothered writing two different posts for my updates so I'm just copying from SMWCentral.

Been working slowly for the past week or so. Mostly I've been doing level design but I've also gotten a few more Shyguy frames done, redid the shared palettes and a bit more. Here's some screens of my progress.

I added a few Swooper Bats to the ruins to represent the natural wildlife that would find it's way into there. Also replaced the red outlines with normal black ones.

I finished the NSMB cave level. For those of you who are going to mention custom pipe corners, they aren't a priority right now. It's playable and that's fine for now. Springboard's palette is now red, may changed to blue.

Oh noes! SMAS graphics! I don't care what you guys think, I'm using them. So they're overused. Maybe that's because they are good graphics? Anyway, it's an icy cave, complete with frozen blocks and slippery floors. You can also see the Shyguy's "big Shyguy" graphics in this one.

I've added Mario/No Mario blocks. The blue are Mario only, the green are Sprite only. Graphics for them are probably temporary.

This is the first world. Echo Cavern. The purple border is due to be changed, to what though I'm not sure. Maybe a set of blues. That thing on the right is the ruins level. Go custom graphics. Mario OW sprite still needs to be changed. Events still need to added.

I've also played around a bit with the game's code. Specifically the ?-Blocks. Let me just show you.

Fish-in-the-block! How annoying would it be to work hard to get to a ?-block and pop it open and find a flopping fish inside? Quite annoying I'd think. Plus, when used in underwater levels, it's a method of adding enemies to an other wise empty area.

I'm having fun with this one so far. Hopefully a demo will be out soon to showcase world one. Leave comments please.

I don't know about adding challenge but it could piss off some people.

Small graphical change.

I swapped the NSMB graphics out for more SMAS graphics because they fit better graphically with the pipes, enemies, cement blocks, etc. However, I feel like I'm using the graphics too much so if anyone has some cave graphics that are compatible with the original Map16 tiles, I'll gladly swap them out.

Hm, I think that's a good idea... the NSMB tiles looked out of place.

Small update for now, more to come at some later time.

I finally got this to work thanks to some help from the mikeyk's springboard disassembly. The red springboard launches you the same height as the normal springboard. The yellow one launches you half the normal one's height and the blue one launches you 3/4 the normal one's height. I can probably make some interesting puzzles with these now.

Three different spring boards sounds very interesting. If I were you I would make one half the normal height, the normal height, and either 1.5 or twice the normal height but thats just me.

I wanted to do that but it turns out that the normal height is the max height. It's set to #$80 initially and can only go higher. Values from #$00-#$7F ground Mario to the springboard.

Yay for double posting.

Anyway, I have a video update today. I want to ask however for help with enemy placement in the level because I've currently not got any enemies in there. I'm really not too sure what to put in because I want the level to focus primarily on the puzzles, not to mention I'm probably going to encounter slowdown from the amount of springboards I've used in the first area...

Here's the video.
