Story.

A judge has ordered Microsoft to stop selling Word due to (what else?) patent infringement. Apparently some company complained about Microsoft infringing on their patent for using XML in a certain way.

This will probably be overturned, of course, but it's still amusing.

(Try and overlook the fact that the article calls XML "essentially a programming language".)

This is one of the few times I agree with Microsoft.

But then again, I agree with anyone who thinks a lawsuit over a software patent is unfair, so...

Ok now this is stupid. I always knew patents were horrible, but this takes the cake.

First few words of the paragraph explain it all. "A Texas judge ruled" -- that explains the whole thing right there judging from the tech articles I've read recently dealing with patents. Why is it almost always Texas where these kinds of things happen? Do they have stupid patent laws there or something? DOCX is even part of the openXML standard or something like that, they're not even suing the right people. Just another frivolous lawsuit in an attempt to make a quick buck. ;

@texas: stop making ridiculous patent judgments kthx

I loathe Word in all of its incarnations ... but come on. It's a standard. It's a bonehead idea to restrict sales of it for any number of reasons.

You must not know the US very well. Texas is deep in redneck country (i.e. the bottom right of the US). It isn't exactly a very technically-inclined state.

Yeah. Texas is where patent trolls go to confuse judges into doing dumb things.

I was trying to be polite and not just come out and troll an entire state. Otherwise yes. I am very much aware of the Texas demographic and with very few exceptions, I don't know of anyone there that I would trust to make any kind of decision.

Even I have simpathy for Microsoft on this one.

Of course, OpenOffice is like a free version of the whole suite.

I wouldn't really say it's trolling an entire state; after all, it is pretty much a given that Texas and the rest of the general area is not very technically inclined.

It should be a given that there are exceptions to that idea, of course. I know a few people myself there.

Hey! I take offense to that! (Not really, I admit some people down here are retarded, and have to fork up money to geek squad as much as turning on a computer.)

Makes me wish I can move up north to California or something. But after thinking about it, living down here, I can make some serious cash doing something a teenager could do in a California High School.

No jobs in California, if anything I'd consider moving to Texas myself.
