A handsome, welcoming new border crossing has had its 21-foot-high yellow "United States" letters scrapped because crazy border people are afraid that the words "United States" will serve as an irresistible temptation for terrorists.

Note the word crazy. I mean, seriously. Why would it be more tempting than anything else over here? It being on the border doesn't change much. The Statue of Liberty or the White House is probably more of a temptation for terrorists than some random sign.

This is beyond ridiculous. Next they'll be taking down all the McDonalds signs since they're bright targets

OK. Put yourselves in the shoes of a terrorist. You want to attack America, you want to rock the country to its very core. Are you going to attack a big urban city or a sign simply saying "UNITED STATES" at the Canada-US border?

If your answer is the sign, then I don't think America needs to live in fear anymore.

I would think this is more of a vandalism thing than a terrorism thing. Only problem is, it's a lot easier to say "terrorism rargh" and have the public listen (or to drum up support in the government from people who don't want to be able to have their opponents call them "soft on terrorism") than to say "we think people are going to try to vandalize it".

So what if it is? Doesn't really change much, honestly. Everything, everywhere, can be vandalized.

At the same time, how many monuments (even of the trivial kind) do you see being built in the slums?

Same thing here.
