Consoles sales for the heavy three are down but...

Wii and DS sales are way down. Hardest hit.

Must be really bad if they're labeling the iPhone as a competitor.

Its because Nintendo is being stupid and keeps marketing to the "casual gamer". The big three don't make money on the consoles, in fact Sony and Microsoft actually lose money for every console they make. For Nintendo console sales there is a marginal profit but not enough to keep the company afloat. Its the game sales that earn the money. How much does it cost to imprint a game on a 5 cent CD....barely anything. If you take that into account with the 50 to 60 dollar price tag its a significant profit. Nintendo just doesn't get that most casual gamers play f****** Wii Sports, not platform titles.

How can the iPhone be a compeditor against a game console? I mean, come on.

They do make more money off of game sales. They overlook it because they used to make good money off of their consoles when they were new. They keep expecting the consoles to keep making all of their money, and they aren't thinking about the game sales.

Hopefully this will be a kick in the ass for Nintendo and they get their act together and start competing again.

In terms of Sony, right now, their PS3 and PSP slid near-similar.

But their PS2 sales? They're up.

The problem is that Nintendo keeps chasing this pipe dream that when the casual gamer experiences Wii's casual offerings, they'll instantly want to try the more hardcore stuff. That's what they think. They haven't seemed to grasp that the casual gamer is just that, "CASUAL." They play for short entertainment, not extended periods of time. They don't buy lots of games. Hell, most casual gamers buy the Wii and Wii Sports, maybe Wii Fit and then nothing more. And Nintendo hasn't realized this and keeps pouring millions into this market that isn't getting them money in the long run. Maybe they'll finally realize that they need to suddenly start supporting the traditional hardcore gamer once more but who knows if it will be too late by then.

So how about that indie game development scene that seems to be all the rage these days? Given that these games are usually made for gamers by gamers (or otherwise, no stress on marketing to the masses, such that you can blissfully ignore the "it must contain stuff found in other popular games" part that the industry somehow needs to abide by), you'd think that the industry would notice them more than they do. I mean, sure, Cave Story and La-Mulana are getting a nice wiiware port, but is there seriously nothing else?

It is because the Wii is a horrible system for longetivity support. I mean unless you have an SD card, you can hardly put anything on your Wii, and even then you have to hope whatever it is runs off SD cards.

PS3 and 360 have hard drives, making it easier for everyone to purchase games directly to it and add-ons increase the lifespan of the games as it is without space being a terribly huge issue like it is with the Wii.

At least with the PS3 you can upgrade the hard drive yourself. I've done it enough times.

Not sure if the 360 is the same.

IIRC, it's even easier on the 360. Has the hard drive bay right there on the top. Just push a button and swap them out.

Don't forget online support in general, which is hilariously pathetic on ye olde Wii.

To be fair the iPhone can pump out more crossword and sudoku apps for cheap than the DS can

But Im not shocked. Has Nintendo really put out a popular game or big name title this summer yet? Really the only thing I saw making waves this summer is wii motion +.

Was only a matter of time.

Yeah I mean it is no problem at all to not know when people are online playing a game that you could join them without having an outside source telling you.

Excuse me if I like to play games with friends.

Try playing WoW without any method of communication other than buttons that say "Hello", "Goodbye", and "More dots".

The wii has horrid multiplayer online if you don't have friend codes ahead of time. There are exceptions, but not many.

Metroid Prime Trilogy will hit in late August but yeah.

DS sales will take a spike worldwide in Q3 thanks to Dragon Quest IX, however.

Another factor to consider is simply market oversaturation. The Wii sold so well in its first few years, it was never on shelves because it was the must-have item. Now, the casual gamers have all bought their Wiis and aren't buying games for them, and the hardcore gamers go to 360/PS3 because they know Wii has nothing. Every store I've been in recently has had stacks of Wii consoles ready to be sold and yet, they are piled high and wide. Best example of this was the other day at...oh god where was it...I think it was Best Buy. There was a pule of Wiis that must have been sitting 8x6x4 feet. There were probably 50+ Wiis in the pile. i remember when finding one was a rarity.

With everyone having already bought the Wii, there's no more market to sell them to. Now Nintendo has to focus on getting out games that attract the casual gamer into buying them, and at the same time keep making the hardcore games that the fans have been craving for years already.

That's the thing though: the 360 and PS3 completely circumvent this with their online services. I'm not too familiar with the PS3's service but Xbox Live allows you to turn on your 360, see who is online playing what game, choose to just join their game in session if they are playing online without having the game loaded to begin with (unless it requires a disc then it asks you for that), and to top it all off you can start a party where you and your friends can chat while you all play different games and arrange online matches with whatever game you want. The only downside is paying for it but with all it offers you it is worth spending $50 for a full year of service with no problems.
