ASUS. Why am I not surprised?

Begs the question: Where are the PCI/e cards and peripherals (USB sticks).

I personally can't even think of anything that I have that would even need anything faster than a USB 2.0!

Still, this might be worth looking in to.

I can think of plenty - USB 2.0 is slow for most thumbdrives of high capacity size.

It also has 'SATA 3' or SATA 6.0Gbps...

USB devices rarely ever get close to the theoretical maximum speeds of the protocol / bus. This is in part due to the overhead involved in the protocol itself (error correction, latency in waiting for reponses), and can be due to the hardware on the device itself. For example, if the hardware has to send lots of data but the amount it can send per packet is small, say, 64 bytes or something. Many USB devices have custom firmwares as well, which adds another layer of software to potentially slow things down. There's probably other reasons but I can't think of any at the moment...

If it can bench nominal speeds of a standard SATA 3Gbps drive or better on a thumbdrive, I'll be happy.

USB 3 might be fast, but it's still packet-based. Not like I'll have a choice in whether to use it or not down the road, but eh. For general input devices I'd use it without thinking twice, but for external storage I'll stick with FireWire (mainly because my external storage devices don't support USB anyway, and because FireWire is way more reliable and actually does approach its maximum thoroughput on my machine.)

At any rate, it's good that USB3 has finally made a debut after all this time.

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

So

USB 3
3x PCI-e express x16
1x PCI x16
2x PCI slots
6 slots for ram (DDR3 I would presume)

Looks like ASUS went all out with this one

True enough.

But when a 256GB SSD costs nearly 900 dollars...it isn't quite there yet.

Once they break the several terabytes barrier and are down to around 200 dollars, we'll talk.
