So, I've noticed that quite a few people in here use Translhextion.

Any particular reason you like it over other hex editors? I only use it 'cause it's the first hex editor someone pointed me towards. Not sure if it has some features that make it more powerful than others or what. Maybe it's just coincidence, who knows.

EDIT: Also, what's up with the program's name? At first I thought it was maybe a typo of "Transhexition" or something

Wrong forum? But yeah, it's also a notoriously bad hex editor despite the unique features it has (WHY WONT YOU SAVE MY POSITION WHEN I CHANGE WINDOW BASTARD).

I use it because it's mostly the first free hex editor I came across back in the day that ran in windows, rather than dos. It has a lot of glaring errors though (you can't search for a hex string with a 0x00 in it, and if you resize the file, and then save, you had *better* exit and reopen the program or else it'll crash when you change a byte)

(also, would this thread fit better in the rom hacking forum?)

It works, it's free, it doesn't crash very often.

So yeah.

For what I need it for with SM hacking, it's perfect. I don't need it for anything more advanced then finding free space and sometimes locating and manually fixing room headers.

I find it very easy to use. I don't really need a badass hex editor which can do nifty stuff.

...Though, most of the times I use Xkas instead of Translhextion. I used to use this hex editor in the past though.

I use windhex as it can display the data in loROM type for me so I don't have to run the numbers in a calculator. Much better for what I need to do, at least in my opinion. :3

I haven't had any of the problems others have reported about T-Hex.

I only use AXE 3.4 other than T-Hex, which has expired. I use AXE for when I'm simply reading the binary and T-Hex for actual modifications. AXE is faster and has less quirks (quirks, not problems; the quirks would be problems but you can get around them with a feasibly minimum amount of effort) and T-Hex actually saves. I chose these two because I can stand to look at their interfaces; other hex editors have ugly colors and hideous layouts. These two are decently compact, have all the features I need and get the job done.

I hate how AXE doesn't save window settings though. T-Hex doesn't either, I guess, but T-Hex's default layout isn't as annoying, so...

A tip for people having a problem with the position loss. Just click the top left byte of the window before switching. It centers on the selected byte; that's why you're losing your position.

T-Hex's Hex search is entirely broken for me, but I just use the text search. I might have to copy and paste over and over before modifying the 00s to the correct values to search for, but I usually use AXE for finding things anyway.

I would like a better hex editor though. Who knows, maybe I'll write one in Java. ("Ew, Java!" right? Yeah, I know. What can I say? I hate messing with APIs in C/C++.)

I love Translhextion, but yeah, it's definitely flawed. My biggest problems with it are:

- It crashes. A lot. Any operation that changes the file size is almost guaranteed to kill the program. Sometimes just resizing the window, selecting data, or attempting to copy and paste will do it.

- It can't handle large files very well. Sometimes it'll slow to a crawl and appear to hang, other times it'll just crash.

- The Search feature is somewhat busted and incredibly confusing.

- Shift + Y is the hotkey combo for "offset mode," which means it gets triggered rather frequently when I'm typing ASCII text.

I've never had the program crash before, even doing those things that you mention, like resizing. I wonder why I have such good luck with it.

The only times I've had Translhextion crash was while loading certain table files into it for text editing. Other than that, it's been pretty decent to work with.

I will agree that the search function in it is rather awful, though.

I use it, but yeah it has issues.

When you load a file into it from commandline whenever you save it will always complain about increasing the file size

The window resize bug (seriously, what the hell? how does resizing a window cause that?!)

Search is buggered

It doesn't support tables properly

It can be hard to keep track of bytes because the text is so small at times.

Despite that, it still works well enough to be usable.

Translhextion has always been my seconds choice of hex editor. If I don't have access to Hex Workshop, I just grab a copy of Translhextion. Only real issue is that Translhextion crashes easily on big files... :/

I've always been a fan of XVI32 over Transhextion, even though XVI32 absolutely fails completely idiotically at copy & paste. ;

But then, when I need to do massive C&P jobs I just use HexEdit (A mac OS hex editor)

I've been using WindHex, and am happy with it. It has all the useful features, including relative search, which I use a lot when creating tables. It even has it's own table editor! Useful for including S-JIS characters.
So, yeah. I tried Translhextion once, but I didn't like it.

EDIT: Whoops. I've made a great start by bumping a thread. So, yeah. Sorry.

I use mostly Hex Workshop. Since I started with it, I got used to shortcuts. The version I use has an annoying bug which makes it sometimes crash when saving files (though the result isn't lost), but I'm too lazy to update.

Sometimes I also use WinHex when I need relative searching, though usually it's better to write some small app to do it if there are many conditions to avoid false positives. By the way, does anyone know of some powerful very customizable relative search tool?

An rather large bump, but it's an informative thread so go for it I guess.

I use Translhextion because I had it lying around when I wanted to hex edit something about a year ago

I think it's odd that in a hex editor, the default for offsets is decimal, however. Usually I'm going according to lists of hex offsets and I have to remember that x.
