From what I understand, it was actually /b/ that was getting (repeatedly) DDoSed, not AT&T, but apparently a large amount of the DDoS traffic was going through AT&T so they temporarily null-routed img.4chan.org to prevent their infrastructure from getting severely boned by all of the DDoS action.
This isn't the first or last time something like this was done and I doubt anyone would have said anything or cared had it not been about a controversial and high-traffic site like 4chan where the most immediately obvious motive would be censorship instead of damage control.

Yeah, good point.
The other site I know was blocked by Comcast was a lot more deliberate about the fact it was censorship.
