Wages have, as a whole, lagged behind everything else in this country. More money going to people = more money to spend and put elsewhere.

It might hurt a bit in the beginning, but "trickle down" bullshit, this puts real money into people's pockets.

I'm all for it.

Having more money means that people will have money to spend, which (if you missed the memo) was the whole reason the economy lagged before.

Huge housing bubble burst -> Several people are driven unrecoverably into debt -> Interest rates climb all over, people in debt have spendable income reduced sharply -> Expendable income stops flowing to businesses, which have to cut hours and workers -> You are here

Providing more real, lasting income will help these problems. Unlike a sudden $600 "stimulus", it will be longer lasting and will hopefully do more concrete things to help fix it.

If you tax a company, or make them pay more, per employee...you're going to get more money for overhead that needs to be paid out to people in total. Paying employees is the CHIEF expense for any business. If a company has already been laying off people because of not being able to afford it, logic dictates that the minimum wage going up is going to generate MORE of a problem for the company...and the fact is they will just have to go through another layoff to compensate. We don't need anymore 'disposable income' in people's pockets...we need people back to work making this money. We need to so that the entire economy gets money the right way...not shots in the arm that don't do anything to provide for things. Not to mention...heh...don't you remember that when minimum wage goes up that everything else goes up in price to compensate for it? Everything for prices will now start to go up and will make this, literally, pointless and will likely exacerbate the problem. You can't raise minimum wage in a recession and expect it to help - it just doesn't work that way. Businesses are not an endless supply of money. ____________________

Disposable income drives businesses.

If people spend $5000 at your business, then you are getting $5000 and will maintain staff to be able to handle that amount of volume.

If people start spending $6000 instead, you will need to increase your capacity slightly to be able to handle that new volume, which may mean hiring more people, giving longer hours, or boosting wages.

If, instead, you removed all disposable income, suddenly people are spending $0, your business is pulling in $0, and you have no reason to have anybody hired.

You can disagree all you want, but more money to spend = more money to drive the economy.

See: Credit cards. Suddenly with their introduction, people were buying more than they could afford (because they could go into negative net worth even with positive spending allotment). The economy soared, until the credit limits were maxed and things ground to a halt.

If you give people increases in real, concrete money, you will get all of those benefits without the bubble factor of that mess. People will spend what they can afford, life moves on.

My father's company is trying to sell itself because nobody is spending money on what they specialize in, because they cannot afford it due to lack of people buying those company's products. Guess why. No disposable income.

Why have a minimum wage in the first place, then? Should we pay the grunts of manufacturing $0.01? Why not?

Injected money is money given to people for no direct reason. That's stimulus funds. A minimum cap on wages isn't.

I've already said how this will help (by giving those businesses more, um, business). But if you want to ignore it there's no reason in repeating myself.

If you'll recall when minimum wage for me went from 5.15 to 6.25 in Arkansas and I was working 72 hours a week on two jobs at 6.35 an hour per each job and no overtime, I didn't get pay raises. This is generally because, again, wages were not keeping up with inflation. Inflation drives prices higher, wages do not increase with them. This is nothing new.

If you feel your job is worth more to your company than what you are getting paid, consider asking for a raise. Simple. (Of course, it'd be best to wait until the recession is over.)

I'd hate to have you move to Washington. The minimum wage there goes up every year. It's no surprise that no companies stay there.

And honestly, it isn't unfair. Unfair would be getting paid $5 when minimum wage is $6. Unfair is getting paid $10 when the rest of your coworkers are paid $15.
