Still getting more of these issues with the local network and systems connected to it. The primary router connecting us to AT&T literally exploded/overloaded earlier on this week and right at that time, one of the side departments went completely down...

Ended up having to work on the side department and my brain is now mush. Start with the fact that there's a main XP terminal and 5 remote 'log-in' terminals that are operated wirelessly, connect to a Wireless N router and communicate and vice versa. Well, I got them finding each other but every time I tried to log in with one of the terminals it would give me a 'TS ERROR - WINLOGON ERROR' and it took me most of the day to troubleshoot it because the main XP terminal also has to communicate with a seperate Intel/Windows-based (2000 Server) comp for all its information...so I had to go back and forth between the two to see if I could get something to work.

Finally broke down and tried the dumb 'System Restore' method just to see if it worked.

It did...for one session and one computer...it would then go dead again.

System Restore. One session. Dead.

Huh.

That was next to the end of the day after I had that squared away...also took the time to grab some trojans off a system with putting Avast! Home on over AVG Network Edition (unfortunately, I could not do that on a server, obviously).

Got there and started working on it this morning at 6:15, got all the disks (thankfully) that would allow everything to be back up and running and started setting up all the users, one by one, and securing the hell out of them. All of them began to finally work. 10 AM rolls around and they're all secured and good luck doing anything outside of logging in on them.

Then I go and start investigating the rest of the side computers...

...well, here's Virtumonde on this one that has AVG...and Malware and Spyware on a system that has Norton 360. Huh.

In looking through CCleaner logs on top of Spybot S&D (which I put on that found these problems) I ran across...

...well it was NSFW.

Needless to say, they're just asking for it. But hey...I'm paid by the hour...gives me something to do.

So what do you tell those customers? Tell them discreetly not to be browsing around online on suspicious web sites?

Bleh. Reminds me when the point-of-service machines at the store I used to work at got conficker'd.

Luckily I was not on IT staff there (just an asst. manager,) but it was a real mess for a while. The guy who was doing irresponsible browsing on one of the computers was yelled at (and then fired later on for putting disparaging comments about our boss on facebook.) But Symantec couldn't update itself and the computers were all unable to connect to the off-site databases. We had to keep inventory on paper for a few days and then enter it back into the computers later.

That location has recently switched to using a Linux-based point-of-service system that looks and acts almost exactly like the old system, and even works with the MS Access databases. I was amazed when my old boss told me about it, he's one of those guys that equates Stallman with God though; he'd been heading up a movement to switch to a Linux POS system for a long time (because they've had worm infections before.)

Anyway, yeah. Not sure why people feel the need for anything that is not worksafe at work. If it's not worksafe ... common sense should dictate what to do there. Drives me insane that people can't wait until they get home; worktime is for work unless you're on your break, and the computers are not yours! Bleeeargh.

Oh we had our bouts with Conficker but they were on computers that were out in the field with customers...wasn't too terrible. Most of ours tend to be ones that launch rogue anti-spyware/anti-virus one after the next.

But this local network has had issues since before I was here with Zlob...I knew this was going to be an issue for a long time going in...but it's going to eventually boil down to a putting everyone on a server behind a pricey hardware firewall, everyone's on the domain, no net access and complete control over what they do.

I mean they went and browsed pr0n one time and then proceeded to take and print it off...well they did so on the primary printer and it was on the network...so it printed on one of the higher up's machines and she is a she...a very religious she.

Needless to say, for what it was, I think her spleen blew.

...Knew that but I thought it was related to a PC you worked on after the network problems ceased, post wasn't too clear at first glance. Having said that, your network sounds like a complete disaster and should just be rebuilt from the ground up. No excuse for most of those problems. You have guys downloading pr0n to print off and beat themselves off to (HOPEFULLY AT HOME) and this is what you get.

Welcome to my job.

Probably not.

They did hire people doing time at a point.
