Bleh. Reminds me when the point-of-service machines at the store I used to work at got conficker'd.
Luckily I was not on IT staff there (just an asst. manager,) but it was a real mess for a while. The guy who was doing irresponsible browsing on one of the computers was yelled at (and then fired later on for putting disparaging comments about our boss on facebook.) But Symantec couldn't update itself and the computers were all unable to connect to the off-site databases. We had to keep inventory on paper for a few days and then enter it back into the computers later. That location has recently switched to using a Linux-based point-of-service system that looks and acts almost exactly like the old system, and even works with the MS Access databases. I was amazed when my old boss told me about it, he's one of those guys that equates Stallman with God though; he'd been heading up a movement to switch to a Linux POS system for a long time (because they've had worm infections before.) Anyway, yeah. Not sure why people feel the need for anything that is not worksafe at work. If it's not worksafe ... common sense should dictate what to do there. Drives me insane that people can't wait until they get home; worktime is for work unless you're on your break, and the computers are not yours! Bleeeargh. ____________________ 744 is a site with musics on it |
