Just wondering if anyone played. If so, what do you play with? What do you think of the new sets? Etc.?

I'll talk more if people actually respond

I played the cardgame way back then, when Slivers were pretty much dominant in our games. I've long since quit, mostly because I switched to WoWTCG.

I do have a huge stack of Unhinged edition though and I'm still planning to make a deck out of them. My friend still plays the game and his "poison counter" deck is pretty evil.

How coincidental of you to start a thread, I just unearthed my old M:tG cards. Oh, the memories of my crazy decks.

I used to play quite a bit of magic. Because my friends still do play, I occasionally get the chance to play with recent cards. Whenever one of them decides they want a lot of cards, they just invite everyone over and draft a box, because drafting is more fun than just opening packs.

Alara Reborn is bullshit for draft. Everyone plays roughly the same cards. You could make roughly as good a deck just from opening the packs. When every card is multicolor, everyone plays mono-mud.

Before that, I remember I had a great time drafting Shadowmoor. Any set in which you can draft combo (Quillspike / Devoted Druid) is good in my book. Also once I drafted that whole block, and I opened enough Figure of Destiny to make everyone hate me. That one wasn't quite as fun.

Anyway, yeah. Still have my old RDW lying around, and six or seven decks in various levels of terrible. Sometimes I play with my sister, who has Mirrodin block white/black Deathcloud. It has so much more character than my RDW.

Oh hey, I heard that they're changing the rules. Combat damage doesn't use the stack anymore, right? Makes poor old Mogg Fanatic pretty bad. But apparently the people I draft with have rejected the new rulings, so I don't have to worry about it unless I go to tournaments.

Shards of Alara sucks. It's far too extravagant.

The Ravnica block was so great in terms of flavour, and it was fun as hell to play. I was sad to see it leave standard.

I slapped together an Alara deck using UBW, with some choice Ravnica and Guildpact cards, and it's really good for just opening tournament and booster packs. Some of this shit's kinda overpowered, but then again, so was Cranial Plating (and Skullclamp).

I remember my friend having a deck, which could loop infinite 1/1 squirrels.

Another friend of mine still buys me decks as presents, although I've quit the game.

I'm not permitted to say the word "Skullclamp" more than three times per game of Magic I play with my friends. One for each copy of the card in my deck on initial play. It's a house rule, because people got tired of hearing me say "I Skullclamp _____ to draw two cards" 4-5 times per minute.

Shattering Spree is one of the most bullshit cards I've ever seen.

Has anyone ever had a real 'Heart of the Cards' moment, where an entire game was turned around with a single draw? I get those every so often. I like to think of them as little rewards for using the same deck consistently for the last four years.

Went to the pre-release of Magic 10, participated in a Sealed Booster tourny and lost horribly.

Still, managed to pull this bad boy:

You are going in my Graft deck; yes you are! *cuddles*

Looking through my decks, some of the more fun ones are:
A deck built around getting an ∞/∞ Griffin Canyon
A deck built around Hurkyl's Recall, zero mana artifacts, and Brain Freeze
A deck built around Donate (lawl)

I did get a small collection of cards as I wanted to play.

Then it hit me that I have no one to play with around here!

Nick: I could see Donate working very well with Null Profusion, Gnat Miser, Diabolic Tutor, and a few others. Throw in some discard and draw shit, run for Counterspells, and presto; your opponent has no hand and can't do dick.

Mine actually revolved around Illusions of Grandeur. Then I'd either use Flicker, Disenchant, or let the cumulative upkeep kill 'em.

Holy shit, I just laughed my ass off at that combo. I must buy this deck. What did you use specifically to search for the required combo cards, or was it totally reliant on luck alone? I really am curious as to how I'd go about building this.

I told you that I like my decks to be fun.

I think I had been looking for something to use with Donate for a while when I came across Illusions of Grandeur. I forget how I came across flicker, but it made it even more lol-worthy (IoG leaves play, you lose 20 life, comes back into play under my control, I gain another 20 life!)

Here's the full deck listing, if you're curious:
Blue
4x Arcane Denial - Good counter for multi-colored decks.
2x Counterspell
1x Compulsion - Draw cards
4x Delusions of Mediocrity - Yay life
4x Donate - Combo piece #1
4x Illusions of Grandeur - Combo piece #2
2x Mystical Tutor - Library search
1x Serum Visions - Draw cards

White
2x Congregate - Yay life
4x Disenchant - Sometimes the death blow
2x Enlightened Tutor - Library search
4x Flicker - Hilarious death blow
1x Land Tax - Mana fetch
1x Oblation - Defense
2x Replenish - Yay life
4x Swords to Plowshares - Defense
2x Test of Endurance - Secondary victory condition
1x Wrath of God - Defense

Land
11x Island
11x Plains

Looking back on it, I should probably cut the Flickers and Swords to Plowshares and put in some Walls or creatures or something...

Primarily, I need a way to search for these cards in my Library; I'm thinking Diabolic Tutor, and run it as Black/Blue spliced with white, and ways to bring Donate back to my hand from my graveyard. Load it up with counterspells, and run about 2 or 3 Draining Whelks for a nifty win condition if things don't go as planned.

Thoughts, Nick?

Could be good, but I'm not a big fan of running more than two colors. I think the Mystical and Enlightened Tutors work pretty well. You could always take more white out and toss more blue search in.

Oh, I just went through my Sneak Attack deck. I have 27 rares in it, lol.

Actually, decks made to be fun often excel better than decks that are supposed to win.

Seen this in several WoWTCG games.
