So, our router seems to have officially broken. We're getting 5-bar wireless, and the DLS is connected via a cable to the downstairs computer and no one is able to access the internet through it. We're all currently using the neighbors' wireless to get online.

So now we're at the point where we want to get a new router. Ours is one of those freebie ones that Verizon gives you when you first get broadband/DSL. We're wondering what type of router we should get and how to set it all up. If anyone has any suggestions for router makes and models and how to set them up to work with our home network, I'd be grateful for the help.

I've always been impartial to Netgear's routers, never having a significant problem from them. Your mileage may vary, though.

Linksys.

I'm using a WRT54G2 with DD-WRT over the original BIOS.

Used it for 8 months. No probalos.

I have never owned a Linksys router that didn't give me some kind of problem, i.e. slow performance, freezing, not communicating with the cable modem, and so forth. Last time I tried to buy one I got two defective ones in a row, at which point I switched to Netgear. Aside from some intermittent rebooting with my current WGR614 (only seems to occur with a large number of devices connected), I've been very happy with their products.

I'll admit I had the freezing occur a number of times when I had the router I now own after about 3 months.

I pulled the BIOS and put DD-WRT on, though, and it's been flawless ever since. That might be most of the problem.

This is the way to go, I've got a wireless bridge set up with two of these and never had a problem. Haven't had to reboot or anything in the 6 months it's been set up.

The only thing I'm wondering is how easy it is to put in this DD-WRT to a router? I'm sure my parents wouldn't want to have to deal with setting it up like that meaning that if we go that option, I'll be the one figuring it all out and I'm not exactly the biggest techie guy.

Ehhhnnn...may take you a bit. I had to figure out which ports I was dealing with to get the thing running right and also which I needed to put on first, etc. etc.

Needless to say, when they give you instructions...it's best to read them.
