| Specter is very reminiscent of Cosmo. That is just ... awful.
Way to ruin a great game. ____________________ Jeez, not coming up with my own ideas is going to take some getting used to. |

| Although I would like to join the crowd and rant about the idiocy of the idea, I can't help but think that our opinions are biased and unfounded; after all, did your parents enjoy every show you watched as a child? American cartoons made as much for adults as they were for children may have been common back in our childhood, but I still find it unjust to expect that the current generation's tastes should appeal to our own. One would likely find his or her generation's cartoons superior than the next generation's simply because they were from his or her generation, and the next generation would likely do the same; chances are, the main reason generation 1 dislikes generation 2's cartoons is that generation 1 had just outgrew children's cartoons by then, and they only hold on to their generation's cartoons due to the nostalgia value they encompass.
Basically, I probably would have despised The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog if I was first introduced to it yesterday instead of several years ago, but I may have enjoyed this Ape Escape show if the aforementioned situation was reversed. So, yeah, if I'm right, you might see people referring to this show when talking about the "good ol' days" in a decade or so. |

Originally posted by BlackNemesis13 I suppose I wasn't clear enough on this issue. Like I said, you likely enjoyed these shows because they were presented to you in your childhood, which helped form your preconception of a good cartoon. An old show that you were, for example, introduced to yesterday would appeal to that preconception as it likely resembles the shows from your childhood. If, by chance, this isn't the case, it would still fall under the universal appeal cartoons have had for many years that I mentioned on my last post. (I've already stated how most modern cartoons have a specific target audience, and I've already stated how it's still no reason to expect them to appeal to those not within its target audience)
I was just giving a personal example of a show that I enjoy mainly because I was exposed to it as a child.
Have they? Once again, although American animation with a universal appeal seems to be found only in movie theaters these days, that doesn't mean cartoon shows have necessarily gotten worse; they just don't appeal to you anymore. Regarding the rest of the message, it is likely that many of the cartoons from your childhood that you consider good are at least partially promoted through nostalgia value.
Although this entire paragraph is moot in a discussion about cartoon shows, I'll still comment on it. First of all, you seem to imply that kids don't know good animation from bad animation, yet you assert that your childhood opinions still match your definition of good and bad. Second of all, I think that even you can agree that Disney still makes good animation, rendering the "Heartless Disney" point null and void. Third of all, the nostalgia value argument still applies, assuming you saw these films during your childhood. Besides, sequels made just to exploit the previous movie's popularity is hardly exclusive to animation directed towards children.
No arguments here. I recognize that events can happen that make a certain show better or worse in the opinion of the fanbase, even though any major change will almost always be regarded as bad. (That's a discussion for another time) However, I'm talking about comparing new cartoons to old cartoons.
Now you're bringing live action shows geared towards an older audience into a discussion about children's cartoon shows. I won't bother saying anything about this, as I would likely wind up repeating my arguments from earlier again.
Although I've seen every Nicktoon from the early 90's (and the late 90's, for that matter), that's not really important. Please explain how it would be "better" for kids. The point of cartoons is to entertain, and if the target audience finds them entertaining, where's the problem? Even then, I've seen many cartoons for children from the 21st century, and I would consider several of them to be at least on par with the classic Nicktoons; even with my nostalgia bias, I see no obvious decline of quality.
tl;dr: Society hasn't declined, you've just metaphorically turned into a old person complaining about kids these days and how they keep their pants too low and their Rock 'n' Roll music and so forth. I'd reply to everyone else here, but I'm tired. All I'll say is that the most recent Ape Escape release in North America was in 2005, and that the show doesn't appeal to me in any way; I just find it biased and unfounded to complain about new cartoons in general. |
