Heading to Providence (in RI, roughly an hour+ from here) for the day with some friends, expected to be great fun. Fireworks are yay and though illegal in Massachusetts, this has never stopped anyone from say...going to New Hampsire and blowing themself to kingdom come. Doubt that'll be me this year but we'll see how the night plays out

I'll be out with family most of the day, either here, there, or anywhere.

Somewhat unsurprisingly my mom's half of the family is completely missing; grandma and aunt #1 are in Montana, aunt #2 is in New York, and mom's at home.

Dad + friends are going to another ~~town~~ city nearby, I'm going to my aunt's with the rest of my family, then maybe meeting up with them later.

Whatever works.

After I turned 18, I've had some good 4th of Jul memories. But for some reason, a memory from my teenage years keeps coming to mind every year on this date.

My mother, before she left, was very strict with me. It was July 4th and I was stuck at home. Not sure why we didn't go out, but I was in my room and I could hear fireworks outside, but I really couldn't see them. All I had was a screen saver on my old computer with fireworks on it.

Not sure why I always think of that on July 4th, especially when I have better memories that I could be thinking about instead.

Strange, really.

I believe it was summer '06 when I was returning from Japan and stopped over in Hawaii on the way back to visit some family who was stationed there at the time. I recall my uncle essentially letting off an entire box of military-grade fireworks...then proceeded to throw flaming plastic explodey confetti balls at the remainders, which were now in a large pile on the road. It make a gigantic colorful explosion of wonder and complete disregard for public safety. And it was awesome. Oh, and some guy up the street blew up his truck by accident. Plus there's a permanent burn mark from our shenanigans on the street. Of course, being as this is Hawaii, they shrugged this off and went surfing/ate coconuts/acted lazy/whatever it is people do there.

If I was at work today... oh man. July 4th is the SLOWEST day ever. Nobody uses their credit cards, and if we want to call people nobody's home. If nothing else, it would have been a cinch.

(Only one person I had bought fireworks with their card, BTW. Probably illegal ones too.)
