So about 3 days ago, all of a sudden, it seems like my computer is taking a long time to process things. It isn't unbearably slow, but it is a noticible decrease in performance. For instance, when I play something in winamp, it will sound like it is constantly rebuffering even when I'm not doing anything else at the time but playing a song. Copying files takes longer, as well as burning disks, and a virus scan that I started 8 HOURS ago is still taking it's sweet time. It also takes it longer to boot up. Even having multiple windows open seems to be too much for my system to handle.

I'm running a pretty recent setup. Windows XP, Intel Duo Core, 3gb ram, without a bunch of shit running in the background so I know I'm not low on system resources. I'm defragmenting my drives in case that's the problem, but it hasn't been that long since they were last defragmented. I'm also checking for viruses and other malware, but I don't think I'm infected. With both cases, it's taking FOREVER to complete any 1 scan, so I don't know right now if either is the culprit or not. It's also been a while since I last reformatted. I may be due for one soon in order to clean out alot of clutter. However, if I can put that off for another month or two it would make my life A LOT easier. I've also dusted out the tower, (which I do pretty regularly anyway,) and checked to make sure that nothing was running too hot.

I don't know if it is related, but for a while now before the slowdown, I've been getting this error message at startup

When I first got this message, I stopped overclocking my CPU in case that was wearing it out or something. I have an ASUS motherboard with an automatic overclocking feature. I turned it on 20% for a while to try it out, but I admit that I know next to nothing about overclocking. Don't know if that may have negatively affected my CPU or not.

Anyway, any thoughts on what may be causing the slowdown?

If it's a CPU failure, it'd be dead, so I rule that out.

I'd check what you did when you turned the Overclocking off. It could actually be UNDERclocking the CPU if you really, really did something wrong.

That's the only thing you changed, right? I bet the culprit is in your BIOS settings somewhere.

The illegal instruction error would probably involve the CPU corrupting things sent to it, or perhaps your RAM is busted.

Either way, it seems pretty serious. Next time, don't touch the Overclock thing unless you REALLY know what you are doing.

Maybe not 'failed' but 'failing' could be the likely case. It could be that the processor has begun to 'leak' after being overclocked as much as it has, depending on length.

About how long has this BEEN overclocked, anyways?

I'm thinking it's the CPU too. It was overclocked for a while. A few months at least, maybe longer. I didn't think about the bad side to that at the time. But I've had overclocking turned off for about the same amount of time, and I'm only just now starting to get problems. I turned it back on again for just a few minutes to see if that would improve anything. No change so I turned it back off.

If my CPU is failing, then I assume I need to buy a new CPU. What would you suggest that is decent performance right now but is still pretty affordable? Also, though I've upgraded nearly every part in my computer, I've never completely built one from scratch before, so there are a few things that I am still uncomfortable with changing out. The CPU is one of them. Is there a tutorial somewhere that would show me how to switch out my CPU without borking anything? BTW, my motherboard is an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe.

I'd say you have a virus.

This one.

And since that's a downloader, you probably have a few more now, too.

Hey, you might be right. I found LoveFly.dll in my system folder. I'm scanning just my system folders now to see if it finds the rest. Looks like its pretty simple to get rid of. I'll let you know if this solves the problem.

Edit: Ran a full scan of my C drive with avast at boot. I'm no longer getting that error message, but things still seem like they are taking longer than usual. It's better than it was though.

Reinstalling Windows, if you don't mind having a lot of work to get it back to where it was, is usually the safest option. :|

It's unfortunate, but unless you can scan everywhere and get it bak to normal, mmf.

Yeah, I need to do that anyway. I have a lot of junk I need to clean off, and some programs I'd like to do a clean update on. However, that would be a major pain in the ass right now. It's running well enough now to where I can actually get some school work done on it. I'm probably going to use it as is until I can get around to reformatting the whole thing.

I'm just glad it looks like my CPU isn't failing after all. That would have really been a pain since I can't really afford a new one right now, or the loss of my computer. BTW thanks Joe! How did you know it was that specific virus? Is that error message an indicative sign of it or something?

Probably going around.

Not one that I've heard of though, since most of the ones I deal with are rogue anti-spyware related.

I Google'd the filename in the error message. Nothing much turned up, but there was a Korean site that linked to that page I linked to. Then Google's suggestion box happened to fill in "hfmd00001.exe" while I was retyping the filename. I figured if Google had only seen one thing that started with those four letters, it was the most likely culprit.
