And secondly...hands-free has been proven to be even worse in terms of people's awareness in comparison to holding up a cell phone in car. It doesn't make it any better (and perhaps makes it worse) than using a cell phone to begin with; it's a distraction from what you should be doing and that's driving.

Well by the same token, if you're talking with other people who are in your car then it should theoretically be a distraction as well.

Still, given the choice between talking to someone on a hands-free device or talking to someone on a cell phone AND not having both hands on the wheel...

Oh, talking to other people is a distraction, but unlike phone usage it doesn't distract you from the environmental sounds and visual cues around you.

My hubby tends to slow down while talking to me in the car. He does this without even knowing it.

That said, it's never been social texting. It's "running late" or 'traffic is terrible, be there soon'. I don't text just to shoot the breeze.

No, no cutting people off. Like I said, it's done at red traffic lights. I might have been a bit slow to take off once, god knows that's a terrible sin.

I don't do it while the car is actually MOVING, and if someone else is in the car, I'd make them send the "running late" or "traffic bad" message.

Jul Mosts 2008
Sometime last year, I got stuck behind a slow-moving SUV that hit a pothole and lost a hubcap. I was considering honking and letting the driver know...until I saw her blathering away very distractedly on a cell phone. She got no sympathy from me.

I've texted while stopped a few times, but only for the reasons Tarale mentioned. If I'm in the middle of heavy traffic I'm not gonna bother parking properly and losing my spot just to tell someone I'm late.

Unless she just HAD to call someone and go "Oh my god! I just lost my hubcap, can you totally believe that?"

For the more hardcore gamers among us, an Xbox Live headset functions perfectly as a hands-free device -- provided your phone or other mobile device supports a 2.5mm headphone jack. Best of all, it works the other way around, too!

So, I was reminded this morning of how difficult it is to drive stick with hot coffee and no cupholders.
