Link to a study done by Car and Driver.

I've text while in the car, but not actually driving. I also try to not talk on the phone while driving. I hate it when others do it, so I try to avoid it myself. If my phone does ring while I'm driving, chances are that I won't hear it due to the music being on loud or I'll ignore it.

Using a phone in any manner while in the driver's seat (Unless the car is actually parked) here is illegal and will result in a demerit off your licence and a fine.

And I agree wholeheartedly, the amount of times I've seen other drivers looking down at their phone instead of concentrating on the road is baffling.

It's stupid. Pay attention to the road, not your freaking phone.

I only find cell phone calls while driving only to be a good idea in the cases of short conversations (i.e. making sure your destination is still there) or emergencies. Your car is not the place to have a long-distance chat about your long lost sister.

Texting while driving is utterly retarded and anybody caught doing so should be shot.

This should be a world wide law. I know in some areas here it's illegal, but not everywhere.

I can understand if it's an emergency/directions, that's fine, but as Xkeep said, otherwise is just dumb and reckless.

About half the people that get out in front of me are on the phone. Put the fucking thing away.

I don't even text. I'm not in a position where I need to. Maybe if I was more on business to text fellow workers that are out on a job but I don't really need another means of getting a hold of someone. IM, Phone, e-mail, messageboard. What else do you really need?

Texting is even worse than talking on the phone while driving. I don't understand why someone would even do it. Hell, I can't even OPERATE my phone while driving because I drive a stick shift as it is. If someone calls me when I'm driving in the car...well they're going to have to wait until I can call them back. Life sucks sometimes.

People are fucking DUMB.

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

Only time my phone comes out is for the "HEY, I'M AT X LIGHT ON Y STREET BE THERE SOON K"

Notice how I say I'm at a light. AKA, not moving.

Quite honestly that's the only time the phone should come out to begin with. Anything else is just pointlessly dangerous >>

I figure at that point why not do something useful instead...

...like make out?

It's as dangerous but at least you get something nice for your trouble...actually, I think my father got in a wreck because of that when he was in high school.

I rarely use the phone when driving, usually if someone is calling me, not vice versa. Though I have been on the phone, smoking a cigarette, turning, and shifting gears before. T'was a bit tricky.

I can mostly text while not looking at my phone, so I don't feel so bad about it; I look down for a split second every now and then to make sure the spelling's right. Even then I don't text that much while driving, usually only when someone texts me and I give a short response.

Honestly I think talking on the phone is more distracting while driving...

Apparently July 10 is when the no texting while driving law comes into effect here in VA.

As far as talking while driving goes, I actually have one of those blue tooth headsets for car use. I'm not allowed to use it yet, but when I get the chance, I think I'll give it a shot. I have to say though, it's bad enough I'm using a GPS screen as well.

I find using the phone in the car for any period of time over a few minutes to be an utterly shitty idea and it is part of why I'm afraid to drive because there are morons who will hit you while they're talking on the phone.

I've seen it happen.

I did all but the smoking part and went 'fuck it, can I call you back?' and ended it there.

HEY CAN YOU SEE ME
I'm bad: I've texted while driving. Not actively while I'm sort of.. going... but I will squeeze words in at traffic lights.

That said, it's never been social texting. It's "running late" or 'traffic is terrible, be there soon'. I don't text just to shoot the breeze.

I've never been in a car with someone who's done that but I'd probably bitch them out if they did.

I mean, seriously... get a fricking hands-free device and that'll solve all your problems. Cars are NOT places to multitask.

I'd like to see/hear the first thing.

And secondly...hands-free has been proven to be even worse in terms of people's awareness in comparison to holding up a cell phone in car. It doesn't make it any better (and perhaps makes it worse) than using a cell phone to begin with; it's a distraction from what you should be doing and that's driving.

The only thing I'll have going that qualifies is the sound system...and that gets me in trouble with speeding tickets if I'm not careful. It's usually not going to get me in trouble with ramming into someone unless I'm headbanging (exceedingly rare).

A friend of mine once tried to text while driving. AT LIKE 65 MPH. A friend of mine actually ripped the cellphone from his hands and threw it out of the window.

Drinking and driving alone scares the shit out of me, if they're saying texting is worse then f that shit.

Being pulled over sober being the DD was scary enough, never gonna take a chance with any of the other stuff.
