Normally when I see a Square Enix stamp on a game I get a little skeptic. I immediately ask myself is this just going to be another generic RPG? Most of the time I feel the answer is "yes" with the exception of Lost Odyssey and another title I can't quite attach a name too at the moment. But I digress, I have been proven wrong with the new Star Ocean: The Last Hope. I was always a bit leery of the series because I was afraid I would be behind on all the canon seeing as there is what..6 games if I remember correctly. But what peaked my interest was that this one was a prequel so it was basically a game in a series with no strings attached. I was almost immediately in love with this game. It showed remarkable similarities with the Tales series in terms of battle style, a fact that I absolutely loved. The story was engaging, detailed, and presented well. I loved the fact that on the hyperdrive waiting time they implemented mini character development cut scenes enabling the player to really enjoy the characters. And it wasn't bright and cheery like some RPG's of late. It was a pleasant mixture between dark and light type of atmosphere. Over all I am loving this game and recommend it to everyone that enjoys a good RPG.

I had my doubts about Star Ocean, so I rented it first. Loved the game, but I wanted to send it back to get another game in. I was finally able to buy it this past Friday. Can't wait until I start playing it again.

Also, I disliked Lost Odyssey. I think I have it around here somewhere....

May i ask why you disliked it? I mean granted it does have some weak points but surely you agree there was an incredible amount of good character development and a pretty neat storyline.

Wait, it wasn't Lost Odyssey, I'm sorry, it was Infinite Undiscovery.

Haha that's ok. But have you played Lost Odyssey? If you haven't I would definitely recommend it. Great story line, great characters, just overall a great game.

The Last hope is very generic with very few original elements, and a lot of typical japanese sexism, with the female cast quite busty and very revealing.

It's so easy right now that all I have to do is run up to creatures with Edge Maverick (groan) and beat the shit out of things. Storyline is so boring that I'd rather be reading the biography of the Wright Brothers. In a word, it's average. Combat is fun, because it's mindless, but the characters are so empty and generic, I have no feelings, bad or good towards them.

I found the fifty minute unskippable cutscene in the middle of the game to be somewhat excessive.

I am currently in the process of finishing Until The End of Time, but given that I am still not through the first disc of the game, I think that there is quite a bit more that I have to worry about. I really enjoy it, though. Except spamming Side Kick has basically made the game unloseable for me, because spamming special moves that chain well together is, for the most part, completely self-perpetuating and carries with it no substantial disadvantage save for constantly being in Danger Mode.

But given that I am the type of gamer who will play a Danger Mario run of Thousand Year Door or reset matches in Punch-Out if I take a single hit, avoiding enemy attacks is sort of something that comes naturally to me.

So yeah, Star Ocean. It is really easy.

Well you each are entitled to your own opinion. I personally like Star Ocean; I do agree with Guts on the sexism bit but that is easy to get over by the other aspects I like about the game. The Japanese still have some growing to do in the sense of making competent female protagonists but in the meantime I will just enjoy playing the games.

Granted. Still, the one thing that reeeeeally bugs me is the main hero being an emo, self-hating pile of misery. Funny how his name is "Edge Maverick" (again, fucking groan), since he totally edge.

Regardless... I spent the 57 bucks on it, I'm going to get my money's worth

Yeah...I never will get over the name choice it just...lacks fluidity of speech. His name sounds like that of a cheesy cartoon hero. Although Reimei has her face-palm moments I am surprised they made the archer powerful and at least somewhat a competent well rounded character, which is a good thing from my view point.
