If they want a dark, scenic wallpaper, though... I could toss over a few of Vista's included backgrounds.

I went back and reinstalled a different copy of XP (one that sucks less, really).

Great news! Turns out that since I've had all of one hour to get it installed, requiring me to reboot back into Windows 2000 until I can get it upgraded and ready for them to use... turns out Windows 2000's chkdsk on reboot corrupted the hard drive!

So now I can't use that copy of XP any more to start the recovery console and try to fix those problems, and on top of it all? The recovery console doesn't even seem to exist in this disc.

This is about 9 hours of work so far I've had to utterly throw out because DERP

... I don't even understand how it's possible for Win2000 to have corrupted the HD. But I'm not going to underestimate Microsoft's capabilities to fuck stuff up.

Unless I'm missing something, why not use the recovery console from a standard XP CD if yours doesn't have it? It seems like it should work fine. Never mind, reread your quote and noticed that it doesn't work with the installed XP anyway.

I remember once having reformatted and reinstalled XP and getting a nasty Vundo infection almost immediately after. I had to reformat again to get rid of it, so you're not alone in the painful installation camp.

I don't know what the problem is either; it's quite bizarre, to say the least.

I suspect the NTFS versions are slightly different (I think XP uses 1.2 or something?) and 2000 might not be fully compatible. Regardless, I'm going to find some way to disable the startup scan.

And yeah, speaking of infections... they get a DLL popup every reboot now about MWSBAR.DLL. That'd be why I'm installing Windows XP (along with Avast! and other things)

I have a volume licenced version of XP which doesn't have WGA; it's pretty useful.

The story about how I got it is kind of amusing - Back in March 2006 I bought a new computer. It came with a folder in the C drive which contained the files for loads of things; many apps (including cracks/keygens - some with included trojans according to Avast) and folders containing all the files for Office 2003 and Windows XP SP2.

I figured out pretty easily that I could use it myself (I used nLite with no modifications to create a bootable version).

There's a folder named "Dialup pass" among all the other crap, I went into it out of curiosity.

So what's inside?
dialupass.exe, Form1.frm, Project1.vbp, readme.txt

According to the readme the program is one of Nir Soft's tools, but I opened the VB form to see what it was.

Some interesting stuff in here.
