On monday I decided to buy myself a Super Famicom and to start a Super Famicom game collection. So far I bought Final Fantasy VI and Ogre Battle, but I'm looking to buy more games once in a while.

So, I'm just wondering what do you think are some of the best Super Famicom games. I already have a list of some that I want to buy, but maybe some of your favorites will remind me of other ones I might want to buy. I say Super Famicom games because I want them to be original japanese games.

An interest in RPGs appears to be evident, so I'll have to throw out Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Live a Live, and perhaps Mother 2.

Other than that, I'd have to suggest Hoshi no Kabi Super Deluxe, Super Mario World, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past as a start.

I'd probably say Super Bomberman 5 - Gold Cartridge if you can find it.

The rest of my suggestions would be out there...so that's about as 'normal' a Japanese cart as I can think of off the top of my head when I'm not at home looking at the collection I have.

I have to agree there. The Japanese versions of its RPGs cost so much less. Even I'm tempted sometimes.

I'll suggest Final Fantasy V.

The funny part it that the label says Super Nintendo instead of Super Famicom .

I'd add Tenchi Sozo (Terranigma) to that list.

Not RPGs... Kirby no Kira Kira Kids. And any Parodius, though probably Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius might be the best choice.

These.

Kirby's Star Stacker made to SFC form and Gradius made to lol form.

Makes me remember I should really look into Otomedius a little bit more...

Good suggestions so far; there's too many games to buy! I think I'll add Parodius to my "list of games to buy soon". I'm mostly looking into buying games that were never released outside of japan for now. I bought Final Fantasy VI at first mostly because that was why I was going to buy a Super Famicom, but then I saw Ogre Battle for only 10$ with the box and the book, so I decided to buy it.

I'm also trying to find a japanese version of E.V.O.: Search for Eden, no luck so far though.

The SFC should be able to play SNES games as well, since I know for a fact the SNES could play SFC games with a slight physical mod, so you'll obviously be able to play those too Erika and I used to play through Tokimeki Memorial, which is a rather humorous and fun Konami-produced datin sim....also any of the Goemon games are pretty solid platformers.

Wouldn't Chrono Trigger be worth something on both sides of the pond?

Oh, I forgot, try some of those Kunio games. Super Dodgeball was kinda neat.

Chrono Trigger actually only has any value on this side, because it was fairly uncommon. In Japan, there's almost always a deluge of RPG games.

I'm actually fairly positive BMF bought Chrono Trigger's JP version for less than a buck.

OH SHIT!

Kunio Tachi no Bannka! Totally forgot about that game...a bit tough but well worth the time if you're big on beat 'em ups. Then again, if I had to say that...then the next thing you know, I'm gonna rattle off Sailor Moon and that's no good (although, they weren't really that bad).

I know Erika would mention Tokimeki Memorial.

EDIT: 11K!

Definitely get The Lost Vikings and The Lost Vikings 2.

I have no idea if they were released in Japan, but they most likely were.

I've never liked how its English version looks. Probably the fixed width font, which annoys me about the Mega Man Battle Network / Star Force games too.

Since each japanese character, be it a kana with a maximum of four or a kanji with like 18 or more strokes, occupies exactly the same space each, it might be the explanation for this issue. Or they were too lazy to put in variable fonts (doesn't this consume a little more CPU from those older consoles, if I'm not mistaken?). I also disliked the fixed font width, but only due to the large empty space between each letter in Terranigma (some 8 and 16 bit games actually have less space between characters). This is also the reason I am actually puzzled when translating Japanese newspapers. Seeing a complex kanji squished (in handwriting you can vary the positions of some strokes slightly at least, to make it look and display better) looks ugly sometimes. It also makes counting strokes for a less-known kanji rather difficult, if it contains special or hard-to-decipher radicals. But enough about that.

Yes, Japanese RPGs should sell usually really cheap (someone I know got a brand-new and sealed Valkyrie Profile JP for about 20 bucks in Tokyo (Akihabara), while the used US versions off eBay sell for quite huge rates), so go for them, and learn some kana, as most games outline important story-related cities and locations either in specific colours, or use very-easy-to-read katakana anyway. You shouldn't be concerned with difficult kanji in those lower resolutions anyway. Hence, Famicom Wars for the ... well, Famicom, even displays the entire text in katakana, 'cept the little menu which contains the only kanji in the game, maybe also in the credits

And be sure to pick up Panel de Pon, well-known and relabeled as Tetris Attack like probably all of us here know. It is fairy-themed unlike the Nintendo-characters European and US release (Tetris Attack), but it seems somehow a little faster and harder than TA, plus features an additional boss, if I'm not mistaken.

Hey now, yeah they really weren't Panic in Nakayoshi land was actually retarded levels of addictive (even if the bosses were 8 different kinds of flamboyant)...I actually made a map/graphics hack of that game back in the day. I think I gave up after two worlds though. Might be worth revisiting now that I think of it.

RPGs are actually not too expensive. I found a lot of the ones I want to buy for cheap, so I'll probably be buying a lot of them in time. I already have a lot of them for the SNES, but I still want to buy the SFC ones.

I'm thinking of buying just a few games at a time. I actually have Sailor Moon games on my list of games I might want to buy

Another game I might want is Wrecking Crew '98, but it's a little more expensive.

Wrecking Crew '98 is a pretty awesome game, but it takes time to learn how to play it. If you want, I can netplay it with you a bit so you can learn it and see if it's good. =D

It's probably so expensive because the game is bundled with the NES Wrecking Crew in the same cart.

Actually, a friend bought it for me, and it was 150 yen ($1.56). Close enough.

If you're big on shooters, you might be interested in a curious little gem called Caravan Shooting Collection. It's basically three Famicom games--Star Force, Star Solider, and Hector '87--in one cart, with a simple menu. These are straight ports, no enhanced graphics or sound, which is kinda neat in itself. Star Force and Hector '87 are kinda poo, but Star Soldier's still pretty great (and the whole reason I bought the cart).
