This is really getting on my nerves trying to figure this out.

The network on a specific server here is a Windows 2003 server. Not sure on the specs. Going through with regular, single-core system and scrolling through this network drive in a folder that has a lot of files is fine.

You do the very same on a quad-core system? LAG. Not just one but three systems.

Figured it might be graphics drivers or graphics-related: updated drivers, tried different cards that I know that worked. Nada.

What would cause something like this? It runs fine on older systems and not on newer systems? Doesn't smell right to me. All of these systems are running XP Professional SP3.

hm. At first I was thinking that maybe it was Explorer not playing nice with multiple cores, but that doesn't necessarily make sense as to why it works on an older system.

Nevermind, re-read that and saw that you said the older systems are single-core.

Try updating/reinstalling the chipset driver. That *should* fix any problems quad-core related, or at least it has for my dual-core. It was showing a pesky 'coprocessor' as an error in Device Manager.

I did. No dice...but...

The situation's advanced a bit. Uninstalled Windows Search 4.0 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 from the system. The problem is mostly fixed.

I'm not sure if it's one or the other or both that caused it.

Probably both, I imagine both were putting quite the load on the hdd.

Well, what got me is that the browsing of the disks on the local hard drive didn't have this issue...but when you did it on the network drive, it would have massive lag, especially in large directories.

I'm not exactly sure if it's completely fixed or not but it's a lot better than it was.

Fucking Kaspersky and Windows Search.

It's Kaspersky.

Go through and put it back on, lag returns.

Uninstall it, it's gone.

Install AVG in its place, it's still gone.

There's your math. Fuck Kaspersky.

Now it's a matter of getting these people here to own up to this logic and the 300+ dollars they spent on this without taking our word for it...but that doesn't leave me in the position to say otherwise.

It was likely scanning files as they were being accessed by Windows (to display), which is why it was lagging. On a hard drive access is much faster, but over a network, it becomes a hell of a lot slower.

So, yes, the antivirus is your problem. Best bet? Find a way to lower the scanning level or, at worst, set an exception for network drives.

I disabled all of its active services a week ago...that's why I thought it wasn't the anti-virus.

It didn't change.

That's how screwed up it is.
