Personally I'd do what I did - get one of these puppies.

It's a combination NES and SNES put together and I've had it for over a year. Works flawlessly so far. And it's cheaper than a used system, for Christsakes... only drawback I've had with it is that NES style connector controllers don't work with it (so you'd need an adapter or some soldering skills to use the NES light zapper or controllers). But SNES controllers work fine in the thing and it even comes with two new ones in the same color scheme as the system.

^ I didn't buy mine from them, I impulsively bought mine from some top google hit and it took a week and a half to get here (in spite of "express" shipping). Anyways, it's worth a look, I think.

That...looks really tempting.

Is its SFC support flawless or does it have issues. There are few things I've been looking into in that regard that I've shelved...

That looks like a generic Famicom Twin, which as far as I know has some problem with sound.

There is no famiclone that doesn't use NOAC, so you'll be getting inaccurate sound and missing quirks. I'd pass.

Yeah, plus terrible mapper support. It's just not worth it in the long run.

*grumble*

I suppose if you own absolutely every game in both the NES and SNES collection it might be a bad buy. If you don't believe me that it's a good product have a look at this:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114088

long story short:

Snes Licensed Incompatible

* Kirby Super Star (Reported incompatible)
* Super Mario RPG (Softwave Revisions 1.2, 1.3)
* Demon's Crest (Plays, but noticable slow-down in areas containing a lot of on-screen activity.)
* Batman Returns (PAL VERSION)
* Terranigma (Reported incompatible, not yet verified, suspected due to region lockout checks, similar to Super Mario RPG.)

NES Licensed Incompatible

* Rolling Thunder (Verified incompatibile on video)
* 720 (Reported)
* Battletoads (Verified, hangs after level 2)
* Paperboy (Verified)

It's not like I didn't do *any* research before I bought this thing. It's reportedly a much improved version of the FC Twin, which was one of the foremost Famiclones prior to the Retro Duo. It can't play SMRPG and Kirby Super Star because it doesn't contain a lockout chip on the console (which would make it illegal to sell, if I understand correctly). Demon's Crest and Terranigma, I have no idea why, probably a clocking issue. But it can play all other PAL games perfectly fine, apparently. As far as NES goes, I can live without Battletoads and Paperboy, if you can't, don't buy it, I guess. It's played everything I've thrown at it so far, except for the things on the list, obviously.

I'm just going to go with buying an NES system. Thanks for the advice guys! Too bad I have to wait a few weeks before I can buy it.

The "pill clearing" sound in Dr. Mario seems slightly off, but most everything else sounds pretty good. I think the square wave channels are a little "smoother" than the real thing. Overall, though, I'm rather impressed, and a little dismayed that it took this long for someone to fix the most glaring problems of the old NOAC.

I wonder...how did they replicate the SNES hardware so well? Stolen schematics? That's a pretty impressive compatibility list for such a complex system.

Actual merits of a system aside, I cannot consider a machine to be a SNES if it cannot play Kirby Super Star.

As for your NES issue, I think a new console is the best choice; this is purely based on anecdotal evidence of a friend of mine who had a similar problem and regretted replacing the part, because something else was broken too.

I hope you get it resolved, though! Emulation has nothing on the original experience. Good luck^^!

These things aren't marketed as such, because they don't have permission from Nintendo, from what I understand. If you read the instruction manual it says "compatible with classic 8-bit and 16-bit cartridge games." Makes no mention of Nintendo whatsoever. I suppose if you really knew a lot about hardware hacking, you could find a way to solder in the lockout chip on to one of these things. There's no doubt in my mind that it could play KSS and SMRPG if it weren't for these anti-piracy measures Nintendo implemented in the SA-1 chip.
