That is so horribly stupid that I almost can't think of what to say. I mean Microsoft built Windows 7 so Opera thinks that it's not right for them to include their own web browser with it?

This doesn't mean that I actually like IE, I just can't believe that Opera would do something so stupid .

Here's the thing: Opera Software ASA did *nothing*; they merely stated an opinion that the EU agreed upon.

I read about the first part of the case earlier, but not this latest part or who was the cause of it.

"Yay, we got Microsoft to take off their browser from their own operating system. Now that I've installed my newly purchased copy, I'll just go on the internet and download Op--

But even the statement in the first place is stupid, it's even worse that the EU actually agreed on it. I don't agree with it at all and I think that MS should have free choice on what software they do and don't want to include with their own OS .

The "cause" of this was nothing more than a forum that misinterpreted the EU's decision and boycotting Opera Software.

Well, I meant the cause of the case, not the boycott. The boycott is silly.

It was caused by a decision made by Microsoft and how Opera Software responded to it.

Opera believes the only reasonable solution is for Microsoft to include a "ballot screen" for users to select which browser to use.

This is perfectly reasonable, and at least one computer I set up actually had this installed by the OEM (it included IE, Netscape (?!), and Firefox, and allowed you to choose which one you wanted when you first opened a web page.)

Again, more likely is that they simply include several browsers by default, then upon the first loading of "Internet" (or a URL or whatever) it asks you which of the installed choices you would like to use. It could also check for an internet connection to check for updated versions and get you prepped before that.

Personally I find this complaint to be entirely valid, Opera having nothing at all to do with it.

That forum is full of morons.

The kicker here is that I'm usually against Microsoft bashing, and would really prefer the same tactics be lodged against people like Apple. Moreso with Apple, even, considering how they more or less killed Skype/other things on the iPhone because UH OH CAN"T HAVE ANOTHER PROGRAM DOING WHAT THE iPHOEN'S BASIC APPS DO.

Look, don't touch. Opera Software even has a version of their "Mini" browser for the Android, which will never, ever happen for the iPhone

(Moreso if you actually want to write apps/whatever for the iPhone. You have to buy into Apple's hardware/software stack, which will, in fact, break the bank big time)

I can say I'm ... partly with both sides here.

Microsoft certainly should be allowed to bundle their own browser, yet a selection would be a very wise thing to have available as well. As for the boycott, well... it's their choice. Can't really stop them.

I do think IE should be forced to be as standards-compliant as Firefox and Opera, though... though there's been large progress made toward such...

As an old crotchety man from the Netscape days, I say this:

Death to IE, but... include it and the other browsers to choose from. Removing IE from even being there as a browser to download other browsers with will just make it like the old days--the first browser install requiring a separate disc and being awkward. That's noooo goood!

Still annoyed how Netscape died. Old Netscape was a great thing. Before they ruined it with that 5.0 gibberish.
