The presidential ones are collectible just as the state quarters were, but do you really need more than one of each per person?

I could ask any number of questions, but I'm just baffled by this one concept: why stash them away?

To our mentalities they are weird, therefore we don't expect to be able to spend them, and hoard them instead.

If you guys find dollar coins odd you'd hate to come to Canada; I didn't know that dollar bills existed until roughly a year ago!

I would hate not having dollar bills. Mostly because I'm not a fan of change in the first place.

Freakin' Canada. I love change, and I love giving exact portions out and not getting MORE change back. Pennies can die in a fire, but when I'm out buying crap, I make sure to have four of the bastards.

If pennies ever go out of commission, people are gonna start complaining about nickels. And then dimes. And then quarters. And then fifty-cent pieces if they still exist. And then one and two dollar coins. "Why are we still carrying around these pieces of scrap metal when we have our vast amounts of paper money to use?!"

"Because you are complaining bastards! Now suck it up and use the damn things!"

=D

Same here. They can get annoying when you get a large pile of them, but you can just change time for $5 bills at any store so...

I usually hang onto mine. They're shiny and they're gold.

Also, if anyone lives around the DC area, you can pick up some dollar coins really easily from the DC Metro system, if you purchase tickets from the machines. They'll give you dollar coins as change. This is pretty much the only way I've been able to get them.

50 cent coins are legal tender here; it's just that they really aren't used at all.

I hate breaking $20's on trivial stuff... like buying a $1.29 drink or something. I avoid that if at all possible.

A co-worker a couple days ago showed me an old, worn-down coin she had. It was a half dollar from 1917; a design different from the half dollars of today. She also had an Eisenhower dollar minted in her birth year, and for some reason the tarnish/filth/whatever made most of the coin look gold instead of silver like it should.

Also, my last round of dollar coins (picked up 7 of the suckers yesterday) were all different: 6 presidents and a Sacagawea. I finally broke out that old song by Johnathan Coulton:

The Presidents (2005):

I keep mine, but that's because I only posses two dollar coins that were both gifts from my youth; I'd rather not get rid of them for a bag of chips. (Of course, I suspect that at least one of them is no longer legal tender, but I never bothered to find out)

For those interested, the coins are a Morgan Dollar and an Eisenhower Dollar.

I know I've got some interesting coins around here somewhere. I don't go out of my way to collect dollar coins (since they are common, all things considered), but the 1975-76 quarters aren't in mint anymore, and half-dollar coins are pretty much nonexistant.

I'm sure I have a few bicentennial half-dollars somewhere...

I rarely ever get them.
I'd get them more often if I paid for my MetroCards on the subway with cash, or if I bought stamps.

My dad gave me the first four presidential dollar coins for Christmas, and I plan to keep them...but I really wish there were more of them in circulation. I think they're kind of cool. (I think we still have a couple Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollars lying around somewhere...) Of course, they're nothing special for people like Syaoran and Higsby (although, I have to admit, those bimetallic two-dollar coins are cool). I wish we'd use more presidential dollar coins.

Can't stand dollar coins. They don't fit neatly into my wallet.

Besides, at work people keep paying with the silver ones that look almost fucking identical to quarters. It's bad enough that they're screwing with nickels, dammit!

I have a few American dollar coins that my dad kept in a little coin collection (along with some random Chinese coins with holes in them), although since I am Canadian, I don't really see them floating around much.

Would be nice if I could get ahold of those ancient low value bills. The other people in this thread who got ahold of them are pretty lucky.

Oh we have strip clubs.

They just aren't as common because the population is more spread out.

I picked up a dollar coin today.

It'll probably end up mixed in with my change. :|
