...because the left joint on my laptop broke (the casing around it literally exploded) and now I can't close the lid, which means I have to send it off for repair assuming the warranty isn't void.

Christ, now how am I supposed to pay for my university ed?

That really, really, really sucks Sukasa, I hope that the repairs end up under warranty.

What brand was it anyway? Maybe there was a recall on the model for a defective hinge? It does not sound like something that would happen often.

HP Pavilion dv9847ca. And I'm mostly worried about University since I was working this summer to pay for it, and since I'll be losing $400 every week I'm not working... yeah, I'm a little unhappy.

...

Is your laptop's joint being nonfunctional really worth it to lose $400 a week to get it fixed????

It has to be fixed some time, and some time soon. The big thing is; how can I work around it without losing the $400/week

The closest I've come is basically commandeering my sister's laptop for work, though that presents it's own issues... I guess I'll see how things pan out this weekend.

$400 a week can easily be put towards a $300 junker laptop that will get you through the service period, especially if it takes a year an a bleeding half to get the damn thing fixed.

Makes sense.

Then you realize these are my parents and all logic goes out the door because it's possible I could use my sister's laptop (if anyone remembers when that piece of crap used to be mine) and so buying a cheap notebook is simply out of the question.

They also seem to suffer from a wide range of other defects (including, but not limited to, insanity, senility, stupidity, excessive anger, insufficient intelligence, and just... everything). But those ones are one of the most common, yes.

..Interesting. I got quite a surprise today; my parents actually just suggested what you suggested, Xk.

Of course, whether anything happens with it remains to be seen, but if it goes through this makes it my third laptop in as many years. Wonderful

The other thing is that since this laptop's still electrically sound, it might make a decent desktop computer for work so I can at least still earn money, though it means the laptop will be stuck at work all summer. Joy.

Unless you can use duct tape to fix it.

As long as the laptop still works, you can work around it if need be... sounds more like an inconvenience and not the end of the world.

It's mainly an inconvenience at this point, but it's going to necessitate buying a new laptop at this point.

That said, I'm at work now, so this is basically the last anyone will see me for a bit besides just before work and during lunch.. and definitely not on IRC until I get a new laptop.
