Article (via Sonic Retro)

Can Wii be of service?
Talk about being user-friendly. Nintendo's Wii, already the most accessible system, confirmed an unannounced new feature will be built into future titles. Beginning with New Super Mario Bros. Wii this fall, players will be able to pause during a difficult level, let the game take over to complete the level, and press a button to resume playing.

Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto says the feature is tentatively called "demo play."

"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready" Miyamoto says. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games."

I see this as meaning two things.

A) Nobody will have to bother actually playing Nintendo's games, or
B) they might make them actually difficult again since you can skip whatever the hard part is.

Personally a little from B would be nice. I can get though NSMB with my fucking arms behind my back.

Considering that we have people that constantly relying on 'cheat devices' I have a feeling that difficulty is already too high for too many as it is.

But yea, I wouldn't mind a little Battletoads masochism. Kids these days don't know what gaming torture is...

Please let NSMB Wii be like, SMB2j or something.

And of course give rewards and extra challenges for those that don't use the feature, like the usual bonus level of hell with a secret boss and a secret ending.

There sure as hell better be some kind of penalty for letting the game win itself. Pansies...

Very interesting... I wonder if they'd give you a penalty for using it too much.

Well, Tetris Attack wouldn't let you see the codes after Vs. Mode (not sure if it worked for the other) if you set 1P CPU to ON and let the AI win for you. Maybe they'll do something like that, just not giving you passwords and unlockables if you skip parts.

Yes, I tried it. I wanted to see which AI was better.

Shiny new layout!

So Nintendo might go back to being actual Nintendo Hard?

Heaven forbid.

Makes me wonder what happens if someone gets into a spot too hard for the computer. >>

I remember seeing some articles on this when the patent was filed. I guess they are actually going to use it. Could be interesting.

Speaking of the penalties system, it'd be nice to see them pull something like Rare did with Goldeneye 007, how you couldn't play a level or difficulty with cheats until you beat it without them. Sure it's a bit different, but as said, the idea that there is some reward for beating it normally the whole way would be very nice.

Modern games are too difficult as it is. I'm in the opposite camp from most people. They've gotten more tedious in recent years, not less.

Actually, it does that if you set 2P CPU on too (even if it's at 7, which is considerably harder than the normal CPUs).

Don't you think this contradicts what Nintendo is claiming to be striving for? They say they want a gamer to feel more connected to a game and have clearly gone a bit overboard to achieve this by developing a way to test your pulse, see how stimulated you are, etc etc. But, if you can just skip over certain parts of a game, it becomes more of a movie than an actual game. In which case, you might as well just go on youtube and watch the cinema scenes.

You can't understand a game until you've explored and interacted with it and if you can without doing those essential things, than there's no point in it being a game.

Depends on which games, but yeah, there's a few really hard ones out there. And they usually get poor reviews because of it. =/

Tedious != difficult.

(incidentally, does this mean a way to skip level grinding in RPGs?)

This is... a start. A better system would be to allow for a player to save wherever and whenever he/she wants to, and to load wherever and whenever he/she wants to; a sort of save state system. Rather than give penalties for using the system, you give rewards for not using the system. Believe it or not, but people are not good at video games. While we all take platforming skill for granted, there are many people, mostly adult gamers, who probably could not beat Super Mario 64, or even Super Mario World. Video games are DIFFICULT. Modern games, more so. You have to know all about how to control a character in 3D space, using all the buttons, etc.

Here's a good video which explains my point better than I can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw_upFVDIkQ

I'm just gonna rewrite my reply to this from Retro (from memory).

That article is taking this... wrong. While it does sound like "the game plays itself for you", I can quite clearly remember the original patent as being rather different.
First of all, note that it's called "demo play". The patent had something similar to, like, demonstration videos, that you could pull up and watch in game, to show you how to do things in levels. With a name like "demo play", it doesn't exactly sound like it's going to play the game for you.
Secondly, the "this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready" sentence. Note the "allow them to clear". This seems to hint that it helps them along with it.
Thirdly, the whole thing is going through a translator. I can remember a few times where translators have accidentally added and removed certain details, giving a different spin on things.

One of the other things I remembered from the patent was that it involved unlocking chapters in games, though; so, you could skip around to points in the game. However, there was something about this being done on a time basis; so you couldn't skip to the ending of a game immediately upon playing.

...but yeah. I think that article is putting a whole different spin on things that the way it is.

I'd imagine it just showing one methods to clear a level.

This could actually be useful if, say, someone got endlessly stuck in an area...

I guess gone is the day when videogames were an actual form of social interaction... I recall back in the day when friends and I would call eachother up or talk on the school bus or whatever about how to get through our games (if we were all on the same one of course), often times getting together and helping one another get through it. Now adays you can go online and ask your friends or look up help on a forum or an faq. But this is basically just encouraging laziness. Oh I can't figure this out...just show me how to do it. Yeah, no thanks. I have a feeling this will be a lot different than how I think it is though, so I'll ultimately reserve my judgements...
