After some considerations, and realizing I only ever spend my $1 notes on food two at a time, I decided I'd give dollar coins a go and see how I like it. And I like it! Nothing like taking exact change to a fast food joint and giving them a neat little stack of coins with no big, crumply pieces of paper in the way. I likes my dollar coins, and I've adopted the spending thereof as one of my many deliberate and trademark quirks.

What about you guys? Do you ever use the dollar coins?

The oldest ones you're likely to encounter are the Eisenhower dollars, minted in the 70's. I saw a guy just the other day who had a couple of these in a fistful of change while counting out smaller coins for his food. Then there's the Susan B. Anthony from 1979 (through 1981), as well as 1999.

Nowadays, dollar coins are those gold-colored ones featuring Sacagawea and the presidents. These are the only ones I'll accept from bank tellers, as I'm kinda picky about using coins that are still current. Anything older becomes a collectible, and I'm in it for the purchasing power.

So far, my quest has been a bit interesting. Banks never seem to have very many on-hand, and a lot of cashiers have never seen the presidential coins before, despite having been minted for two years. In any case, I'll make my little impact on the world one meal at a time!

Oh yeah, any tips on where I might be able to get ahold of full, $25 rolls of these things would be appreciated. I'm not interested in spending $35 at the US Mint website, though, as buying money at face value and still coming out short has its ethical implications.

I like to hang on to the ones I get, since I get them very, very rarely. I wish they'd show up more, though. :\

Oh, of course. All the time, I can't get enough of them.

(Oh, wait... of course, I'm in Canada and we have $1 and $2 coins in circulation. How convenient. )

Bleh. I hated getting the things when I worked at a gas station...both those and 50 cent pieces. We usually couldn't get rid of them, so they just kept building up in our tills until we were forced to dump them in a grocery bag and shove them very carefully through the bill slot in the safe. I'm pretty sure the managers eventually told us not to do that. What the hell were we supposed to do? :|

Also, I'd much rather carry a nice stack of ones in my wallet than a heavy pile of jangly coins at the bottom of my pocket.

On the off-chance that I do get them (usually at the Post Office) I'll find some way to spend them.

Obviously, vending machines are out.

I'll use the newer coins if I get them, but the older ones I'll keep. I already have a small collection.

I don't believe I've had a dollar coin since 2004.

It probably vanished while moving. :|

Yeah, this.
Although I'm quick to break a twenty rather than fish around for change.

If I ever got a dollar coin, I would likely stockpile it like I do all my other cash until I find something more-than-standard I want to get. For some reason in America, a dollar coin is just that rare to find. Or all the collectors have them, one of the two.

Fives are only used when I'm getting gummies and a slurpee at 7-11.

I also live in Canada which means that I see dollar coins all of the time. I have a really old $2 Bill laying around somewhere though, it's probably worth more than $2 now .

I would probably use dollar coins if I ever got them. But then again, I rarely buy anything in a given week.

On the other hand, I would love to start paying for stuff with two‐dollar bills…

Useless.

I collect all the 50 state quarters instead.

The old ones are good for collecting too.

The new dollar coins remind me more of Chuck-e-cheese tokens. >.>

My family collects them. I can't rememer exactly how many of each dollar coin we have, but I'd probably guess that if you counted how much we all have in our safety deposit boxes it'd come up to over $1500 worth of them, possibly close to $2000.

I'm not being critical with this, but I'm honestly curious as to why some people have a sort of "treasure hoard" mentality when it comes to dollar coins. They're nothing new: even the gold-colored ones have been around for nine years. They're still a dollar: they won't become more valuable sitting in a treasure chest. The presidential ones are collectible just as the state quarters were, but do you really need more than one of each per person?

I could ask any number of questions, but I'm just baffled by this one concept: why stash them away?

The dollar coins that I have are from 1921. I also have a few old half dollar coins as well.
