Things to do: Barricade doors, head upstairs, destroy the stairs, and paint an SOS on the roof.

Those are my plans, unless there's a better alternative (government intervention, etc.)

That actually sounds like a decent plan.

Only issue is actually destroying the stairs... and you'd need paint and a brush too.

Chainsaws are unwieldy and need fuel. Flamethrowers burn your house down. And just where would I escape to?

I'd probably first contact all of my relatives and friends to check if they would still be alive, then I'd set up a rendezvous point to my old school so that everyone would try to gather as much food and weapons as they could and get there. Bomb shelters and animals, possible land for growing vedgetables and more.

If that wouldn't be possible, I'd probably just try to get everyone together and find a big boat and head to the sea or some lake.

Step 1: Find at least three allies for the other cardinal directions.
Step 2: Learn the ins and outs of any preferred weapon and two pistols at one time
Step 3: Learn how to use grenade-type weaponry properly
Step 4: Run for five hours each day without stopping.
Step 5: Consist and substain body by eating nothing but local plants once or twice daily.
Step 6: Body build with my neighbor's personal workout set.
Step 7: Collect enough cash so I can get supplies for the long journey that I will inevitably have to make
Step 8: Buy those supplies, then learn where the safe cities will be and plan a route to the closest one
Step 9: When apocalypse hits, place the skills learned from steps 2 through 6 into active use using everything from steps 1 and 8.

In case of single zombies, aim first--fire only when you have perfect aim or when spotted.
In case of zombie squad, use either rapid-fire or a long bladed weapon. Blunt strikes to the head don't decap.
In case of the one that leaps (hunter), wear plated arms and torso equipment that does not hinder my movement but is thick enough to block a stab from a spear.
In case of sick fatass (boomer), an exploding can of skunk essence to distract the smell senses
In case of the chameleon (smoker), make sure one arm has a sharp object so I can simply swipe with my forearm to cut free from the tongue.
In case of giant enemy zombie (tank), a custom gun that can embed explosives into flesh-like objects (maybe harder) will do the trick.
In case of the false cry of a young child (witch). Don't be dumb, turn off that light.

(All this and I haven't played L4D, so if portions are incorrect please correct me on them)
