So, long story short, I've come to the conclusion that the onboard realtek hd audio I've been using has gone kaput. So, I'm shopping around for a new soundcard, but I know next to nothing about them.
This one looks frickin awesome, but I'm not sure I can justify myself spending $180 on a soundcard.
I'm somewhat of an audiophile, so the most important thing for me would be sound quality, the higher the better, though it doesn't unnecessarily have to be at an insane level. I'd like to get something good around the $100 range. I'm not really into gaming outside of emulation so that's not a priority. I'll mainly use it for movies and music. Ease of driver installation and use is also important. I've been hearing bad things about most creative cards in regards to that, but then again, I've only just started to research.
I'll be using Logitech 5.1 analog speakers, though I may eventually get a digital set. So I'll need a card that supports that. I'll be using windows XP as long as I possibly can so vista compatibility isn't a huge issue for me right now, though I do want something that will last me a good while.
Any suggestions? |

Me, I'd get a sound blaster.
Why?
1) It's cheap.
2) I'm not running Vista, and at this rate I probably never will.
3) Hardware/software problems? Give me your worst! |

That's another reason why I'm looking at more expensive cards. I intend to do a lot of recording through my line in port. Mainly because I help my dad out a lot with the audio part of whatever project he's doing, but he still refuses to use anything other than a cassette for anything . It was actually while recording a cassette through my line-in port that my on board audio died on me. I'm still not sure exactly what I could have done to completely fry it, but for whatever reason it is completely dead now. |

430 | I've heard Sound Blaster cards suck, and that their whole 'crystallizer' junk is just marketing gibberish. I'd go with a cheaper version of that $180 card you showed there.

Yeah, I had a soundblaster that they claimed was the best on the market, and when I upgraded to my IBM Thinkcentre, the onboard sound sounded wonderful compared to the Soundblaster
Also, try to stay away from sound cards on Ebay, I've had problems there...

I have realtek right now, but $180 is cheap IMO...
but then again, the only cards I'm really interested in are Pro/Semi-Pro Recording Soundcards. A cheap one of those starts at around $300-$350. They can get a lot more pricey than that too.
wish I could only afford one . I've got $100 in cash, but I'm trying to save about $600-$2000 for a good, all tube guitar amp. If I can get $2000 (which I doubt, as I have no job) I'd sell some guitars/my current amp and get a marshall JCM (whichever I could afford, preferably the 2000 aka Super Lead)... Although I'll probably only barely scrape up $600 after selling two guitars and my amp.
but now I'm driving this thread off topic. |

| I ended up going ahead and buying the Razer a while back, and it is awesome! It is absolutely perfect for everything I need to use it for. I also ended up finding it a little cheaper, I think around $160, so I am very happy with it. |
