Just had to share this, because few would get how delicious this is...maybe a few of you have encountered this but...

As you might know, I'm one to using Avast! as a virus scanning program and I generally put such applications as Spybot - Search & Destroy (for secondary, real-time malware and trojan scanning purposes) as well as Malwarebytes for another scan for malware in general. This is generally a good triumvirate for me and my purposes of maintaining systems security that I've come up with over time and for what works for me right now, at least in the free perspective.

I've tried to convince the people here to switch to it over AVG, since we're using the network, paid-for edition of it and it has done absolute crap in comparison to what the free, home version of Avast! has already proven (even Microsoft's Live OneCare did better). I was not able to convince them otherwise, even with company computer proof (instead I probably came off looking like a 24-year-old upstart that doesn't know his place). So...they wanted Kasperky Internet Security 2009 to be placed on their systems to test out, 10 seats/2 years at ~320 dollars.

So, of course, I'm placed in charge of the whole thing even though I really don't want to go about putting Kaspersky on these systems and I am using this test comp, or rather a replacement quad-core for the president of this company, as a means of putting together security to make sure that we don't have to deal with all we have been ever again...or at least get it to where it's tolerable and that the systems can take care of it with less influence on my end (hence why I wanted Avast).

So I have Firefox and Spybot S&D already installed. All Microsoft Windows updates are on this system. Good start right?

Well, I start up the install process, get through for a few minutes, and lo and behold...Kaspersky borks at what's been installed on this system.

It has issues with Spybot S&D; it claims incompatibility with it.

My first reaction was an arched eyebrow, second was an audible and rather confused 'huh?' and my third came later as I read 'click next to have this product uninstalled automatically'. I shrugged, clicked it, had an Uninstall dialog for Spybot come up.

Interestingly enough, it asks 'Why are you choosing to uninstall this product?' and it has a drop-down combo box that goes with it. One of the options was 'Kaspersky claims to be incompatible with this software'. I liked 'claims' on that so I clicked it and a dialog popped up.

"We were not able to reproduce the alleged incompatibility and Kaspersky has not been able to produce an explanation either. We therefore have to assume its request to uninstall Spybot-S&D is just unfair competition.

The Anti-Spyware Coalition defines software that uninstalls other security software as possible malware. Do you really want to trust software that reduces your systems security to improve their shareholder value?

You can re-install Spybot-S&D after installing Kapersky should you tolerate their patronizing and want to continue un-installing Spybot-S&D."


Ba-zing. I about died reading this. Most people here that know about systems security will know of Spybot S&D and its overall reputation for being used in systems...so that's probably a nice stab at Kapersky in the tone that has been shown in this message box. Not to mention that Spybot S&D was made to work in tandem with your system security as a means of bettering it, not to override it...helps that it is free and that the only means of money that Spybot gets is through donations.

If this is true about Kapersky being likened to malware, after the grand testimonies on their site about being the best (even though their main page got hacked recently), and it being true I will laugh my fat ass off.

The only thing I dislike about avast is something that is a problem on my end (That stupid 'Virus database has been updated' alert slows my computer down to a crawl. Then again, I have a POS comp, so it does not matter to me). It's a good anti-virus software with amazing potental. I don't know why people would be paying for their anti-virus software when Avast does just as good, if not better job at the software you pay for. This is something always questioned when I tell people to stop paying for that garbage and just get something free.

As for the little statement. I giggled like a little schoolgirl, threw my hands up in the air, and instantly bookmarked this page for anyone who does not believe me.

They can kiss the fattest part of my ass.

Oh I shared that with one of the lead engineers over the phone about 15 minutes ago and he was laughing about it as well. I have leverage here and support to make me look like I actually (sorta) know what I'm talking about out of personal experience rather than my own agenda...but when it gets proven like this it's kinda nice.

And yea, the only real reason they're not going with my suggestion is that one of the four people (which would include president here) that actually owns and operates these servers didn't like my suggestion...and therefore my points on it, in this situation, qualify as moot.

They'll learn.

Here's a little bedtime reading...

This was made back in April of this year. A quote later on in the article about Kaspersky:

"Earlier versions of Spybot Search & Destroy were incompatible with our products and we received complaints on a number of occasions from users having compatibility problems. Because we value the interests of our customers above all else, we had no choice but to detect Spybot Search & Destroy as being incompatible with our products," Grebennikov told Betanews. "Current evidence suggests that there are no longer any compatibility problems between our products and the latest versions of Spybot Search & Destroy, and following on from a detailed study of the issue we are ready to remove the detection of this application in future versions of our products."


To which Safer Networking is happy with. To the other two, they may persue legal options.

Oh, and we're having problems with this one a computer already. It's causing it to black screen into un-usability after starting a scan. Trying to resolve/replicate this issue on another comp now...

This; I think it's just a general thing about Avast. I use it and have no problems with it - it works great. I remember when I plugged in the hard drive from my old laptop and I was looking through my stuff, it found a lot of viruses/trojans in there which I had no idea about.

Avast's update lag isn't that terrible for me, but my computer isn't really that bad - it just lags for about 2-3 seconds right before it shows. It's annoying but doesn't happen all the time.

.. actually, I don't remember having seen it in a while, brb checking why

I believe you can change the update notifications in Avast! if you so choose to. I know that a low-end 600 MHz comp that I worked on had similar issues but it was mostly because of the video memory and speed more than the processing power's concern.

Hey I won't let this thread go to waste so I'll pop in another story...not as exciting but at least more WTF than the last...

Yesterday afternoon I got a few calls from the service tech office trying to get some intel on why USB ports on an ARCOM/OLYMPUS Pentium III motherboard wouldn't work. The only thing I could figure is that they either had bad pinouts, the USB cords were damaged or they had something screwy in their connections (i.e. they were 1x5s and not 2x5s so they might've had one or both reversed). If it wasn't that, then perhaps something went wrong in the installation of XP to begin with (yea, on a Pentium III) because they had shown this sign FOR THE PAST EIGHT MONTHS and hadn't given us a call about it.

Needless to say, they're way out of warranty...the longest we give standard is 4 months and very few ask for an extension when they're paying for the lowest common denominator machine that we offer anyways. P3's are most definitely not a great thing to run with XP as it is, so it is slow.

But it gets better.

Come to find out that, for whatever reason...whether it was them or the service techs fucking with it...the whole systems goes kaput. Endless cycle reboot. So, of course, instead of attempting to diagnose the problem they just say 'fuck it' and let the computer guys (that'd be me) handle it and get a motherboard out to them with a new hard drive.

Now, we don't really carry those boards anymore. They're dated. I'm having to look through old ones that need to be tested to find something that works. We have a clone, using Acronis, of the machine in question but there are some issues. The first being that it was clone on a 100GB 2.5" IDE drive, initially. A Seagate. The only things we now keep in stock, thanks to my boss being a prick and not understanding that it'd be good to stay at set capacity, was 40 gigs. SOOOOOooo...I had to perform an operation I hoped would scale down to a 40 gig. It seemed to do the trick.

I finally get things hooked up on a test comp. I get a DISK BOOT FAILURE off the bat...check BIOS settings, they're off, reboot. Try it again. Endless cycle reboot. Fuck.

So the clone didn't work. Naturally. Okay fine fuck it we'll do this from scratch.

Grab an XP SP3 Pro disk, go to work. Redo the whole drive from a fresh format. Installs, goes to reboot, gets to the point where it has to do the second phase of the install.

It hangs on a Fatal System Error.

...

Oh what the fuck.

Okay, what's the deal here. I go through and I check through another board. Dead, so that's no dice. I check yet another board. It works but comes up with the same issue. I'm about ready to pull my hair out attempting to figure this out because we've only tried hard drives in these things twice (and it was 2 gig CF cards beforehand). No one's left anything in terms of documentation to get this done. SOOOooo...I start looking through specs, motherboard information anything you can think of to give me a clue.

I think I honestly lucked out in what I came up with because I was looking it over just the other night on similar issues someone was having...but I noticed that the ACPI function didn't come up in the documentation. When I looked in the BIOS, however, sure enough there are ACPI function in the Advanced configuration. It was enabled.

Needless to say, disabled it, ran it again, worked. Fucking thing has shit in the BIOS that it doesn't have on-board. Now what the fuck is that about?

These cheap-ass systems that we sell on the bottom REALLY chap my hide. Everyone here wants them deep-sixed but we keep selling them anyways in hopes of some customers that want barest bones when they could just go a little higher to get something halfway decent. Honestly, you're paying out quite a bit of money for machines that control things that cut metal with frickin' lasers attached anyways...you may as well...

But yea...dealing with that this morning. Not to mention I'm holding down the fort solo and need to get a few things going on a few other machines here but those are lesser priorities until I get this machine shipped out. I'm just waiting for Setup to get done now...

Next case:

Server acting up over at one of the other buildings. Another rogue anti-virus software culprit. Fun. Thankfully, we got it fixed and they didn't reboot but I still noticed that things were funky on the speed...even though it was a Windows 2000 Server with a main hard drive a SSD of 4GB.

So I take a look...sure enough it's next to full. LOG files are cluttering it. Delete them, tone it down on logging in IIS, check the disk space...34% free. Still a little slow though...

Then I run Disk Defrag...



Fatality.

Needless to say I ran the shit out of JkDefrag all that I could. I got most of it but it wasn't enough to get all of that heap.

"Text disappears magically out of the box sometimes"

Nothing else, not the application it was on, not what browser etc., nothing. Just that line of text. Had to get up and go check and see what the problem was, and it turns out it decided not to disappear when I was there.

Freakin magic computers fuckin with my qi.

It's not really that bad actually - you get a slowdown for about 3 seconds once a day. I think it's a good trade-off for totally free virus protection and updates.

Doesn't slow anything down. I have it turned off like that here.
