"From dialogue that loads one line at a time to the lack of PS3-level graphics (high-res static art aside), everything seems like a remnant from the early 2000s."

Score of 60. Sounds like that review can be discarded fairly quickly. :\

Virtually every NIS game will get a negative review from some website solely based on aesthetics. It's inevitable.

However, this doesn't explain the IGN review...

3.5/10. OOF.

In order to keep up a chain of attacks and activate combo techniques, you have to hit a face button to attack, quickly switch to a new character and then hit another face button to make them attack in turn. This is the shortened explanation, of course, as attempting to document everything on screen would be like outlining the design schematics for a jetfighter.

Yeah, I mean honestly, having to do that in an FPS to switch weapons mid-combat is so confusing and difficult to understand! Oh wait.

For example, there are five separate menus just for dealing with items. If you want to use an item, you go to one menu. But if you want to sort your items, you go to another menu.

I've never seen this kind of interface before. Not once.

This sort of counterintuitive nonsense extends outwards to nearly all facets of Cross Edge's structure. When you're traversing the world map, you have to scan the surrounding environment (by pressing Square) in order to uncover event incidences.

Yeah, Riviera's MOVE/LOOK system didn't really exist. It's all in your head.

They should really just put neon signs everywhere. PUSH SQUARE BUTTON HERE TO WIN!

The more people you introduce, the harder it is to get emotionally involved, which is supposed to be a huge part of the RPG experience.

Obviously the most perfect game has only one entity, that being you. Everything else is just clutter and baggage.

The most baffling flaw in Cross Edge's design, however, is the financial ramifications of death. Yes, you read that correctly. When your characters die, you'll usually have to spend insane amounts of gold in order to revive them. This is especially problematic in the beginning of the game, as one of the first revival items you get (the Blessing Leaf) costs 1000 gold. You only win about 100 gold from your first few battles. Resting in safe houses isn't that much better, as your own characters charge you hundreds of gold just to revive a single downed fighter. Yes, your own characters mysteriously man the shops in Cross Edge, which doesn't make any sense. "Sure, I'll save the world with you, but I expect you to pay me when we all collectively run out of supplies."

I love how he says "first few battles", as if getting 1000L over 5~10 battles is some super-challenging task. I mean, heaven forbid you actually have to spend some time getting funds.

Also lol at item shops. Has he never played an RPG before? Even when the entire world knows you're the savior, you're still charged out the ass for things.

Closing Comments
Cross Edge teaches us a very important lesson: there is a fine line between "depth" and "convolution." A game that could have been an entertaining compilation of iconic Japanese characters turned out to be a frustrating, awkward mess of menus, gameplay imbalances and annoying dialogue scenes. As appealing as this game may first appear to JRPG fans, I simply can't recommend it.

It also teaches us another lesson: These people shouldn't be writing reviews.

I've played only about 10 RPGs, total, from the NES era up to the PSP era, yet even I can see how most of these complaints are just attacking the game because "ohnos it has rpg cliches" and "interface is too complicated to get in the 30 seconds I'm alotted to play the game".

The best part is seeing the huge disjointment between what this dumbass editor says (3.5) and the reader reviews (~8.5). I guess NIS didn't purchase any advertising with them.

I can condense that whole review down to one likely fact.

He got his ass kicked by the Prinny fight and has been butthurt about it ever since.

Not to mention that there are a lot of butthurt people that have seen this and CHAOS WARS (which is trash) get over but not their fucking Namco X Capcom which they hold in so much higher regard when it really isn't that great a game to begin with. It's worth it...but the reason it didn't go stateside is simply Namco not allowing it and they've been devestated with crossover games ever since. I read plenty of those type of comments on other forums talking about this exact same thing.

And that battle system isn't really that tough. If you can play Ar Tonelico II with the way it keeps up, you can more than assuredly play this one. The reason why the combo system is as diverse and heavy as it is lies with the fact that...well...THERE'S ACTUAL WORK IN IT!

I will say that I'm not a fan of the slowdowns. The Prinny fight especially has this...but NISA had this issue with Disgaea 3 and released patches to fix most of these problems; I would surmise similar will happen here.

Oh and death-wise, reviving is lv. x 100 gold. We remember Disgaea? How bad does that get over numerous characters at very high levels? And this is bad?

I think this is a joke review or the person isn't qualified to review over being too butthurt about it...but to each his own. You can only truly review niche games if you have the tenacity to go past something as common as derp mario bros lol.

Maybe they just have it in for NIS these days. Lack of sponsorship money.

I will say, to go along with the whole difficulty curve, my time is a LOT easier with Aurica in my group. Life Warmth and Life Shower are easily two skills that work very well for me with the way I'm grouped on the playfield right now.

It's really been the only way I've survived the way I have.

Oh fuck...

Oh man is this game a timesuck. I'm dead serious...there is so much depth to this game that...geez...these reviewers have absolutely no friggin' clue that it hurts my brain just thinking about it.

Guess I'll give you a status report. For the one guy that's worried about getting G in the game, I'm currently holding 113120 of it and I've spent quite a lot of it grabbing and making gear. Not to mention I've taken my time in grinding weapon levels and attack levels to get new ones. I'm pleased to say that I've collected a 79-hit combo off of my findings thus far and I've been able to crash the last boss I took with so much as waiting a turn the going all-out in a wail-fest.

Kinda different than the Prinny fight that slaughters everyone.

I've also managed to break the 10,000 damage barrier (11K damage) in a combo so I've got my fifth trophy and a nice paying and rewarding title to go with it. Course, the next one after this one is 30K and I think the best is 1M.

I'm currently sitting with Lyner at lv. 19, Marie at lv. 16, York at lv. 19 and Aurica at lv. 19. For those of you playing, here's my take on what's given to me thus far (I'm still really not that far and if you read the manual, no spoilers here):

Front row goes to Lyner (Ar tonelico) out of personal preference, really. He takes a beating and dishes it back just as well (anymore, better) and he's one of the best from the very beginning. Off the bat, I had a feeling I was going to have fun using him and I've not regretted keeping up with him. I've yet to see a good enough replacement for him, sans Raze (Mana Khemia 2) who seems to have the power to be his equal and possibly even Mue (Spectral Souls) but she seems a bit limited for me to use just yet. That's not to say she might not be better later on as I get equipment found, bought and/or made but I've not seen anything good for her just yet. Helps that he has a good lit-based attack that does 8 hits standard. His EX attack is a two-hit powerhouse and it works. I will say that Morrigan (Darkstalkers) and Felicia (Darkstalkers) would do the job just as nice...but what's nice about this game is that you can take personal preference and run with it. Hell even Prinny (Disgaea) would do a great job I think. If you like any character for whatever spot, you might just be well off with them and they might not hurt you in the end. There's some decent balance here and it's really hard to find a set system that is 'the best' that I've come across thus far...

Second row has been the most difficult to make decisions for so far...I started out with Miko (heroine for Cross Edge) and she did well for a nice amount of the pre-game but it got to the point where she was getting fairly limited. She is does have a good sweep and a fairly high-hitting, high-breaking EX attack but that's fairly limited at this point still. It was when Etna (Disgaea) got into the mix that I started contemplating changing her out, and I did. Prinny Raid is awesome. Then I started finding ways to getting items and found an interesting one for Marie (Atelier Marie) which gave her more use to me and not to mention a lot of power and a five-hitter that comes along with her. Any of these three, honestly, will probably do you well but Marie is currently my most powerful character and can attack anywhere at any time.

Third row's a no-brainer - York (hero for Cross Edge). There's been only that's come close and would probably end up being a good alternative if people don't like York for whatever reason and that would be Zelos (Spectral Souls). If you're big on Yuri Lowenthal, he voices him...but I don't know why they got him to do Zelos...could've been York better, I think but...eh. York could easily be a one-man army if you wanted him to be. The only gripe I've had with him thus far is that, for a gunner, his HIT has been deplorable. I've done quite a bit to make sure that it's gone up with his level as well as his STR to get some power behind him when he attacks (as HIT, as you might assume, doesn't power his shots).

Last row goes to Aurica (Ar tonelico). I've not really found a suitable person to switch her out with because she's been my primary healer ever since the game's started. It is absolutely necessary to have her or someone that can heal like her. Needless to say, my whole arrangement on the 3x4 is affected by her presence. I'd like to put someone like Shurelia (Ar tonelico) or even Lily (Mana Khemia 2) in place of her because they both seem to have great potential for offense...and much more so for their comboing and range ability...but neither of them have given me healing thus far and my priorities currently require it until later.

I have Lyner top-center, Marie second-center, York third-center and Aurica top-back. This puts the front three in trouble with 1x3 straight attacks a lot but I need it for Aurica's healing ability, which is a 5-panel plus formation. Now you'd think I'd go around that because of a plus formation, an example being to put Marie up to second-top or down to second-bottom but it doesn't work like that...Aurica's AoE heal must attach itself to a person and only adjacent people next to that person are healed along with her. That's the only thing that's really sucked about AoE in this game...it must attach itself to a person. You can't just choose a spot unoccupied and attack it and have the magic attack it's AoE and expect it to work. Things don't work like that in this game...but you get used to it.

If I moved Aurica in place of Shurelia, I think I could push the 80-hit combo line. Honestly, I've not really seen much of a point to force myself too far at this point for that, since the rankings currently have some ginormous ownage on them. All stat ranks have been beaten to a pulp by this one guy who's maxed it out to 999 on all of them within the course of a few days. I may be in the high 20s or lower 30s right now for base, which it's based on, and I can't even imagine jumping that far at this current pace...so it may mean there are a lot of stat UP items that exist (they do exist, I've run into them a lot). Everyone but Aurica has got a MAX HP UP once (ups your HP by 500) and Etna also has one.

I could go on but I think you get it. Lot of game here.

Glad to see that the game's worth it.

Wonder if the lack of reviews so far is solely due to the fact that it's either a timesink or people can't beat it.

Up to lv. 29 with York now. Marie's at 28, Meu at 27, Lily at 26.

Got my second healer. Scarily enough, it's Marie.

Needless to say I can use a lot more characters now.

Oh, and Raze, by himself when at full AP, can do 59 hits easy before anyone else gets a shot at a single character. Needless to say, my combo meter maxed at 131.

Still, not enough...but enough to get my ass into the top 100 rankings.

Managed to clear about 44K of damage...and in a hard area to do so, no less. I could probably start racking up the combo amount again if I so choose to.

I think the most ironic part of my current part is that Marie has the most HP at 7200...and she's not a physical tank in the least. The closest to that would be one of my front men in the 4000s.

At around level 40 or so now. Managed to open 16AP skills on everyone but Meu who just got a 14 AP skill (and a magic one at that...she's a physical powerhouse more than anything but it is a high breaking move).
