If i7 isn't enough...

Try eight cores.

Server-based. Should be out late this year or start of next.

Well it is the core wars era now right...

I wouldn't mind one of these chips though, nope, definitely could go for one of these and a new build.

Tempting.

I could have sworn that the i7 was 8 cores. Just goes to show you should always research multiple sources before making the final conclusion eh?

Can anyone fill me on their own details about the Intel i7 for me so I do not look like an idiot?

V - Yeah I heard it uses 8 cores, 7 cores for something, and one more for something else. I can't get into the full details right now because I am tired. But that makes more sense to me. Thanks.

i7 (Nehalem) supports 4 cores. It uses the LGA-1366 slot.

Beckton (Nehalem-EX) supports 8 cores. It uses the LGA-1567 slot. It also uses FB-DIMM for RAM instead of DDR2/3 (FB being Fully Buffered).

Woo, 8 cores. That's nice. Now how many programs can actually take advantage of that many? Hell, how many can take full advantage of two?

I still have to force some of my games and emulators into single-core mode to keep them from going bonkers...

Not to mention that this is built with the intention of going in more than one socket.

We're talking servers here, server's were meant for the 8 core beast.

Forgot to mention most programs can't even use 64-bit, which is a simple toggle switch on compiling IIRC.

I went for ahead-of-the-curve dual-core, 64-bit before the average person even thought about it.

I'm only getting any real use out of it NOW. Forget about 8 cores. That'll take, ehh, 3 more years for every two cores, so... I'm betting 9 years to be used properly.

Related to this, Core i7s are after Phenom II's currently OC record...

On the brink of releasing the i7 975.

Didn't know that Deneb made it to 7.1GHz...so AMD IS still on top in the OC department...

Now AMD's coming up with six cores by this week.

Six core Opteron, Istanbul.

Heating up.
