Originally posted by Tyty Just to clarify, penicillin is an antibiotic, and it has nothing to do with controlling your immune response unless the immune response is generated due to bacteria. Otherwise, penicillin is useless for treating allergies, just as usless as a solar-powered flashlight. Originally posted by Tarale Because you will save more money and headache down the road. Taking out wisdom teeth is easier now when you are in your 20s/30s than your 50s/60s because you will heal better. Also, nasty things can happen if your jaw develops a cyst or something due to poor care of wisdom teeth. |

| Although, I remember after my wisdom teeth pulling, the pain didn't last as long. You've used ice and the works from day 1? And you've been taking your antibiotics too (and haven't missed one)? It's probably the swelling that still producing the pain. Other than, taking more vicodin or sometihng like that, not sure what else you can do other than to wait it out =(
Was this a general dentist who took out your teeth? |

HEY CAN YOU SEE ME It was an oral surgeon who took it out.
The tooth was impacted, and taken out under sedative / local anaesthetic over the course of about an hour and a half. Before removal it had been pushing and crowding the teeth in my bottom row. I've been using ice packs from day one, and yes, I've been taking my antibiotics; initially penicillin (which triggered all-over hives) and now clindamycin. I was also ordered off ibuprofen in case that was triggering the hives too. I've been rinsing with salt water like I was directed as well, and eating soft foods, just starting to venture into chewing soft (not mushy) things as well. It's OK when I'm medicated (panadeine forte; which is acetaminophen and codeine), but when it's not oh boy... I hate waking up in the mornings, the pain is terrible.... had to go to work this morning, and nearly fainted in the shower from.... the pain? Or something? The pain is half "i have a big fat hole in my jaw" and half "I've had my braces adjusted", which -- as I don't have braces any more (haven't for 10 years) -- I have to assume is because the teeth are moving back into place. But yeah, I've been taking care of it. Whee. I just want to stay at home and sleep though, not be at work, trying to THINK. ____________________ |

| ouch...having to switch antibiotics probably contributed to why it is taking so long. I guess for you, score 1 for why dentists are awful people to see. But a flip side to the question is, why did God give us so many teeth? =P |

HEY CAN YOU SEE ME My understanding is that it's an evolutionary trait we no longer need.
Back when we didn't exactly have the greatest dental hygiene and knowledge, we'd lose a bunch more teeth. The wisdom teeth came in when we were older to replace those we'd lost. The third molar (wisdom teeth) would just pop into place where the second molar is and everything would shuffle over cause there were so many gaps. Of course, now we look after our teeth and we don't tend to lose so many, so we don't need a spare set to come in during later life. Of course, I had an advantage; many of my teeth were pulled when I was a teenager and getting prepared for braces. So for me, I'm lucky; in three our of four cases my third molars did fall into the place of a second molar. And the fourth..... became a severely impacted wisdom tooth cause I have a tiny mouth. ____________________ |

HEY CAN YOU SEE ME Nah, Codeine isn't that strong. It's fairly mild as far as these things go.
Now Vicodin, which somebody suggested, is stronger. And I opted to be sedated. Well, actually, the dentist suggested it after getting the sense that I'm... a very nervous person. It's not a good idea to perform surgery on someone with an anxiety disorder without some sedation... ____________________ |
