About 5-10 years.

If it isn't this, it's multi-layered Blu-Ray discs or HVDs...

That's looking pretty cool.

Discs currently have three spatial dimensions

I love how this makes it sound like somehow we'll find dozens of new spatial dimensions.

Maybe this was CERN's whole purpose for the Large Hadron Collider...

A color dimension and a polarization dimension? Wow. I can't imagine the impact this will have on the entertainment industry.

This is partially why I skipped the HDDVD vs. Blu-Ray debate.

I had seen the research on these and concluded that in a few years, these suckas are gonna trash Blu-Ray without even trying.

Meh. The smaller and more complicated storage technologies get, the more concerned I am about their durability and reliability. For example, wouldn't a relatively minor disc scratch by today's standards wipe out a good chunk of nanoscopic data? Would bending the disc shift the particles far enough out of alignment to corrupt the data? Most people are rather careless when storing or handling optical media, judging from the condition of your average used disc at a game store or pawn shop.

We have processors with how many transistors in them and you're worried about that?

I'd say if they're going that far into the trade of getting that high up in terms of capacity that they'dve been through years perhaps a decade or more of testing before it gets to the salesroom floor.

The difference here being that CPUs are mounted on a solid package, often covered with a protective heat spreader, and are rarely handled after installation, thus greatly decreasing the likelihood of getting scratched or bent.

I've found even through comparison of CDs and DVDs that CDs can really be beat to crap before they're unreadable, but DVDs are certainly more sensitive to scratches and whatnot. I've heard that blu-ray discs are even worse for this, but I have no first hand experience with blu-ray.

EDIT: They might require being in some kind of cartridge. So they look something like a chubby 5 1/4" floppy disk. :p

Might have to do with the shield aspect too.

I would think if it gets out of hand that they can always adopt a cartridge system (EDIT: DAMMIT PAULGUY WHY WHYYYYYYY) of sorts...sort of like how they make it work for hard drives or floppy drives.

Honestly, circular media is on its way out for devices anymore. The PSP's successor may be evidence of this...but it's a matter of making it work at a fast pace that is the issue and not to mention capacity.
