There's of course the RPG Maker programs which, while not supposed to be free, have unofficial English translations you can download for free from a few sources. Just know its technically piracy since the Japanese versions are supposed to cost money, but if that doesn't bother you then I'd highly recommend them as a great bare-bones engine. I haven't had experience with any version past RM2K but I hear the more recent ones are incredibly versatile and customizable in terms of scripting and engine capability. ____________________
