Lack of funding kills them off.

You know, if a CERTAIN GAME had come out several years ago, this may not have happened. *coughs* But as the above Kotaku article states, Take Two owns the rights to said title and maybe, as suggested, another studio could finish it off in a much shorter timespan.

This is actually the end of an era, as 3DRealms originally started off as Apogee and provided me with a lot of enjoyment as the shareware kings (well, them and Epic). There's now a new external company with the Apogee name, but still... sad times.

I'm still taking this with a massive grain of salt, because afaik they were still re-releasing older games on consoles... As of now it's just a rumor until it's actually made official via a press release.

That doesn't mean someone will come along and fund further development, though. Team Fortress 2 took forever and look how that game turned out.

Deep Silver and Apogee Software have issued the following statement: "Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

Yeah, but that's a separate project.

Xk: I wonder why Take Two doesn't take over the development themselves. I'd find it absolutely hilarious if their guys looked over the code and saw that the game was stalled at around 90% complete for the last 3 years.

More like Duke Nukem: Taking forever.

There is a fan base for the game though. A rather large fan base at that. So a publisher might buy the rights and end up hiring workers to continue the work on the game. Always bet on Duke.

Interestingly, I followed the links from Kotaku to Shacknews to one of the blogs that supposedly put out art, and all of the DNF stuff is missing. THe post's there, it's just... empty.

I laughed pretty hard at 1:30 - 1:40. That sure is Duke Nukem all right. It looks like it would be a good game.

So what happens when a company (say, Take-Two) asks a developer (say, 3D Realms) to produce a game for them, and the game was still nowhere close to being ready after several years of development despite the fact cash incentives were offered to have the game released at multiple points?

The company sues the developer.

I love how many people in the comments thread there don't seem to realize that $12,000,000 isn't really that much in game development terms (especially over the course of 8 or so years).
