First state to actually pass a bill though the senate and governor without any vetoing or court interference, so congratulations to them.

Baldacci said in a statement that while he has opposed gay marriage in the past, “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.

“This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs," the governor said. "It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of church and state.

“It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government," Baldacci said.


Good man. Re-enforcing seperation of church and state is very good, and it means that churches lose all ammo against this. After all, civil marrage is handled by the government; they can still reject anything they want, but that will merely be a formality.


If you couldn't guess, the various oh noez teh gay is obviously a joke, and while I am not gay, I am very much for equal rights. So!

Considering what the Bible Belt is (hell, the name alone)... yeah. That probably isn't happening unless it's made into federal law/an amendment. Which it may very well be if a majority votes for it!

They just need to get it though their heads that marrage isn't religion-only... honestly, I'm surprised they allow atheists with this kind of mentality.

Give it two or three. The ideals will fade.

The only problem I'd have is how far they'd fade. I'd be looking at it at a moral standpoint more than a religious one (obviously) but how far do you go before the morals die with it?

And it'd be at least another six or seven generations before it'd be even close to being accepted in terms of behavior (if that, we still have racial prejudice).

The bottom line is...unless you're a straight, white male, you've got some sort of an axe to grind with prejudice of any form and will continue to get it, law or not.

What do you consider to be a "generation", exactly?

Personally I think it's a majority of stats allowing it is a possible reality in the next few years. (3-10)

And what morals? Nobody is suggesting anything in that respect as far as I can tell.


As for prejudice, of course. People will always have those; the thing is that most of us are mature enough to not let those have any effect on our judgement. Some of us can; some of us can't.

I doubt you'd be able to convert the US to accept it in less than 35 years. I just don't see it happening, if ever, honestly. By moral worry, for most people that comes from religion. That doesn't from me...but it does from many. By introducing that 'hey this is legal but the bible says otherwise' means 'oh hey the bible says this but who cares' and that might go so far as people not really caring about morals whatsoever. A twisted thought, but still very possible and likely and the further you tend to get away from a religious standpoint, the less likely you are to worry about morals anyways. That's the stretch I'm stating from something as small as 'gay marriage is okay in this state'. It's farther reaching that than for a lot of people.

As for the whole judgment thing, maturity doesn't really have anything to do with it. It's how open you are. My mother would probably be less open than I am and my father would be WAY less open than I am...to go so far as to say that I know for a fact he's a homophobe. News like this, if he's hearing up on it, probably doesn't affect him much now but if he ever heard this state was getting it passed...he and so many many MANY other people would absolutely flip.

Just remember that with the victories like this, there are a lot of people that aren't happy about it at all and are probably in the process of wanting to get such things overturned.

Also, no refrences handy, but I do believe some of the surveys I've read have shown atheism rates to be rising thoughout the US (nearing, if not over, 50%), so even in that regard... religion isn't as strong as it was.

Religion hasn't been strong since the Internet came into play, honestly...mostly because that introduced everyone to the rest of the world and people went 'oh...they do this and that's okay?'.

But the 50%+ mentality, I'd have to say 'fuck that mentality'. That's like sore-winner mentality almost...because unless people are willing to accept this on a much higher scale (maybe 80/20 or better) then that's forcing people to accept ideals because a percentage majority voted as such (even if by a slight margin)...which is no better than the very opposite of saying you have to accept being heterosexual or else.

No, it's sore loser mentality. If 60% of people agree to one solution and you're part of the 40% and feel wronged, you're being a sore loser. Your option lost. You're welcome to bring it back if you think you can get better than 50% next time, but you still lost.

This is bullshit. There are laws on the books that people disagree with now. Almost everyone can find at least one that's actively enforced that they take issue with - you have complained about some yourself, I believe. But these things being legal or illegal doesn't mean we think it's right.

Why the fuck would this be different?
