Seriously?

The one-millionth official English word could be either defriend or noob.

We'll know on June 10th.

Oh good grief. Seriously? Wow. And yet there are a whole bunch of words that you'd think would be "actual words" that aren't.

So we've got a Facebook term (defriend) or a gamer term (noob).
Personally, I'd go with noob.

Well I know that there was around 400,000 in the 70s.

7 of which you couldn't say on television.

399,993...to 7.

What a bunch of noobs. There, now I can say it while not degrading myself to the english language.

I had to do it.

Noob seems more useful, considering it would sound odd using defriend in real life context.

I'd pick noob, honestly. It has much more universal use than defollow or defriend.

It seems odd for both canidates of the One Millionth English word to be related to computers/games. Most people would have expected it to be related to somthing else, like a uncommon word.

(Not that Noob and Defriend aren't uncommon, just somthing non-computer/game related.)

I would enjoy seeing the winner for this.

Considering the way the Internet and gaming have grown in the past 20+ years, I'd say it's really not all that surprising.

"Noob" still seems like improper English to me, though, even if it were to become an official English word. It doesn't seem like something you'd expect to find in the dictionary...

That's how I feel about it too. It's too...improper and slang to be taken seriously by me. Not at all what I'd expect to be official English. Then again, what do we know? We don't know what all the words are in the official language. For all we know we could have some pretty fucked up or crazy nonsense words that are official english.

NOT OVER YET
...

Not that I'd be caught dead using noob in a serious fashion. Fucking word's horrible.

Hell, when I walk by a group of people at school and I hear one of them shout out noob, I get this wonderful, wonderful feeling. Like there's a bit of a draft flowing on by.

A draft of shame

[Edit] goddammit irony's so clever yet cruel

"newbie", yes... "noob", eh...

Then again, D'oh! (without the apostrophe) is in the dictionary. Defined as: "expressing frustration at the realization that things have turned out badly or not as planned, or that one has just said or done something foolish."

So who knows. "defriend" sounds just as dumb.

"Newbie" is a given by this point, at least for me. "noob" not so much.

DEFRIENDED

It's one of those things that really only makes sense on the internet, and even then, mostly best for jokingly threatening friends whenever they say something you disagree with (especially if it's aimed at you). The lesser the insult, the better.
