I know a program like this exists, but I wanted to see if anyone knows of any good free programs that I could use. I want to record my progress/playing games on the PC without having to use a video camera. Any help and nudges into the right direction would be spiffy.

Nothing free, I'm afraid (at least that I'd recommend).

Best I can say that I would use is SnagIt though. I've heard okay things about Fraps, but I don't use it.

Camtasia. 3.0 is free depending on if you find their free release to students version.

(If not, I'll be happy to 'supply it for you')

If you're going to be YTing it...please don't...

Unless that thing is capable of taking decent shots that won't interfere with picture quality, scanlines and a whole bunch of other things, I seriously wouldn't recommend that either. :\

I think many would be happy to supply you a copy of something that works for your purpose.

I've had fairly good luck with Camstudio myself. Just make sure that you don't have too much running as you record since it is a bit resource hungry. Also, I've noticed that the longer the video gets, the more likely it is to have something go wrong in conversion. Though don't let that discourage you, I've only had that happen after trying to record 30+ minute videos. Recording in segments is your best bet if you want long videos.

It's a bit laggy for what I need and there's no sound.

Never mind...didn't see the opt for audio. Gonna test it again with less things running in the background.

You're also using how old of a system? :\

If you don't have a decent setup and vid card, chances are you might have some issues with recording.

I'm running a dual-core with this vid card and I only run it at 640x480 @ 30 frames per second. The audio's at 32KHz...I still have issues with dropped frames (very few but I still get them).

Brand new computer...well, maybe less than a year old.

Having problems getting the audio to work. Might try another program if I can't get it up and running..

Hey Tanks, wanna send that program my way?

Sure. I'll PM it.

Also, depending on what game it is, you can use X-Fire recorder. It should be able to record sound depending on your type of sound card. Rule of thumb for me is as long the card's not a realtek, it works. I find X-fire to work great when you're mid-game in TF2 and are about to do some crazy intelligence run. I just hit the key combo and off it goes recording some great quality video.

It could very well be that you don't have the correct audio source selected.

If you get to your Volume Control, I'd check your Options, go to Recording and make sure that your Stereo Mixer or the System Mixer (however it's defined, should be the meter on the far left) is selected. You might have it on Microphone or something and that could be most of your problem.

Anya, what OS are you using? It's been my personal experience that CamStudio doesn't play well with Vista. I never could get the sound to work. I use Camtasia for my recording.

Yep, I have wonderful Vista.

I already went into the sound opts and everything is set right, it just doesn't want to work.

Try using the Edit button next time.

Anyway, the hard drive shouldn't be affecting the speed, unless it's running in USB 1.1 mode or something.

Or in case it's heavily fragmented or something. That happened to me once -- I was trying to record an uncompressed video and the result was just a stuttering mess from a certain point onwards (always at 2 minutes in I think).

At least I think it was the fault of fragmentation and the hard drive not being able to keep up or something, because I didn't have those problems anymore ever since I reformatted it.
