I'm getting so annoyed by this.

I've been sick with a cold for weeks now, long before this swine flu crap posed a threat in the US, yet everywhere I go people hear the sickness in my voice and respond as if I'm a magician who made AIDS airborn in an attempt to KILL THEM ALL. I can't turn my TV on without hearing more crap about it. It's EVERYWHERE. Come ooonnnnn.

There's a posting at work where it says that if you start sneezing a lot at home, stay at home and don't come into work.

The thing most people fail to remember is that colds and the normal flu are also out now, and that not everywhere has it.

Where I live, there hasn't been any of it, yet every time someone gets sick, even if the person knows what they have, they want to test them for it.

Anya: Well, that's obvious even if you have a NORMAL COLD but people still do it anyways because they're not hit too hard by it. I was at work when I had my last cold even though I had a rough two-day patch where it was kicking my ass, but it wasn't like I *couldn't* work. :\

I saw people with FLU MASKS downtown today. *bangs head on desk*

Hey, I panicked about it and wound up in the hospital for something completely different*.

It's also why I haven't been watching CNN as much lately, bleh.

That's a different problem all together. Don't panic about things like these...because the likelihood is that you'll be all the more susceptible thanks to most people's immune systems weakening. This has actually been proven to be a fact.

And yea, watching CNN all the time will tend to make you feel hopeless if you take that fear mongering as complete fact...

If I followed the advice given out, I'd be hiding under my computers right now just because one day of the week I was sneezing everywhere. (Hint: While I don't get severe allergies, the pollen does make me sneeze some days.)

I'll be glad when everyone will shut up about this.

It recently came to my state, which means everyone will start to freak out. That is, if they let it spread around.

What a lot of people aren't really covering is that there is always such a thing as it come back next year and the year after.

I would worry then. Mostly because it'd have a chance of actually doing some damage once it's spread far enough and it's been sitting around in incubation long enough to do some damage when they all go nuts at the same time.

Then...MAYBE THEN...we might have cause of alarm.

As it stands, you have more chance dying from HIV or cancer, as mentioned, than you have an close chance of kicking the bucket with H1N1.

Is anyone noticing an interesting trend with this topic? Not this topic specifically, but basically over the internet in general.

When it first came up. Yeah, people on the internet panicked. But now everyone just ignores the broadcasts by what is shown by the news. Everyone on a lot of forums now are like: "Look, you are an idiot if you are scared of this virus. It's just the flu".

I think it is pretty funny actually. The internet makes people panic, but now it's having the opposite effect. Hell, look up 'Swine Flu' on youtube and there are dozens of blogs about the topic of people making fun of it.

That's most topics like this in general.

They're mostly 'omg we're gonna die' and then they're all 'lol idiots'. Mostly to cover for their ass worrying themselves. Only human nature.

But most will sure believe anything that comes out of the media's mouth regardless...

Actually, hardly the internet. Media in general. Observe:

1. Newspapers, television, etc "HOLY SHIT THIS whatever IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS OMG"
2. General public listens to this
3. Panic spreads
4. People with more than two firing neurons realize "wait, hasn't this happened already with 'bird flu'/'SARS'/autism in vaccinations/whatever before"
5. Those people find out that it is actually nothing near what the media says

This is basically anything the media puts out. Count on it to be exaggerated, blown out of proportion, chopped into tons of soundbytes, and all kinds of other shit.

Well, if a thousand people got the virus and half of them died worldwide, then yes I think a lot of people would panic and have a reason to do so.

But now if you look at the latest stats for Mexico... 26 dead out of 1025 cases. Sky's not falling that much now.

Canada's doing a fantastic job of *NOT* keeping this under control, by the way... we ballooned to 140 cases today, closing in on the US which has 10x our population. Plus the media freaked when we had our first serious (i.e. young girl was hospitalized) case today. Um... weren't we due?

zzzzzzz

This should be getting ready to blow over pretty soon, with the way things are looking.

I think what any form of news should just do from now on is not ask any analyst for their input on the subject. Thanks to crap like this, people are panicking for no reason at all.

Texas health officials have confirmed the first death of a United States resident with swine flu.

OH NOES.

But wait...

Carrie Williams, spokeswoman with the Texas Department of State Health Services, said Tuesday the woman had other, chronic health problems, but didn't offer specifics.

...Uh-huh. Carry on.
