| Well, Valve games have a lot of pre-optimisation so they work pretty well when you strip them down bare bones. The biggest problem they have is that they scale up horribly. |

Yeah, Valve games run pretty well on any computer put together in the last 7-8 years, really.
Unless you have a graphics card which has more shader support than power to use it.
I have to run TF2 in directx 8.1, 640x480, with everything set to low. It's awful.
But then there's the beautiful computer downstairs, which can do the above at 300 fps.

In other words, all I'll be doing is finishing homework, drawing something random, sketching levels for games, going outside, reading books or playing board games. I'll probably even sleep hours earlier out of boredom...
Forced crap like this again? :| What's with teachers and doing crap like this, lately... first FP, now you.

It is rather silly. What's the ultimate purpose of the assignment, to show us that we can live without technology for a certain time? Sure, it's possible but in this day and age, everything is becoming more technological. This sort of assignment seems to come from those that can't get out of the past and want to make us follow their belief.

It'd be funny if he made you type a write-up about it on a computer afterwards.

Yeah, I haven't had to do anything of the sort.
Helps that 90% of my courses need a computer to do them anyways.

I have physical eduction this semester and if I ever had to do something like that I wouldn't be able to because I also have a computer science course this semester .
Computers are becoming essential to our daily lives, I don't know how they can just throw random "don't use the computer" assignments at you like that .

I can't pretend to have done it, either, because my parents agreed to do it with me.
First mistake was telling your parents about it.

My University reccommends students getting laptops for research purposes, but the only thing it has led to is plagirased research papers and assorted lan gaming.

It does, now that I think about it.
Point remains, though - if they didn't know about the assignment, you could have BS'ed it. And those are the assignments you really should BS.

They think it's a great idea and all to try living like people did before technology was so prevalent but that's the major flaw. Technology is prevalent in everything now and so to say go X amount of time without technology becomes harder and more boring than it was back then. Now you tell someone to do this assignment and it just becomes "How much boredom are you having today?"

But guys, can't we just play with our ball-in-a-cup toys?
Handcrafted wooden ball-in-a-cup.
I mean, one can still draw and such to pass the time if you really need to.

Well sure, it's not that I'm saying that there's nothing to do, it's just that so much entertainment comes from technology now that trying to figure out alternate stuff to do is harder.
I guess that's a bad thing actually that we're dependent on it for fun but I still stand by my case that there's no good reason for this since I don't see times when we WON'T have technology available in the future. It's just going to get more and more prevalent.

Or sleep for a long, long, LONG time.
It would be just fine if the teacher EXPECTED everyone to slip up and then talk about why. It's when the teacher's dead serious...

And the scary thing is, I'm using it.
I'm just going to go right through everyone's sense of common and do this still. It's not too terrible on the eyes unless you brightness is cranked.
EDIT: Damn...some of these I could've done just a slight bit better job of ripping on. It was bad enough trying to get the side-pic cleared (25m of work).
